Single channel Plexi type, ideas?

Hey guys...

I've finally made a list of things I NEED in an amp. This can be either a combo or a head, I would prefer a head.

Features:
30-50 watts
El34s or EL84s
Single channel
Master volume (preamp gain control also, duh)
FX loop

So what rings a bell with any of you? I am open to all brands, cheap and expensive. I want to be able to use the MV to setup a good thick and slightly dirty clean that I can boost into heavy distortion with either a couple of OD pedals or distortion pedals but I also want to be able to throw in chorus and delay once in a while, hence the FX loop.

I know Matchless may make some amps like this but who else does. Scott, is something you can cook up?

Help me out guys!

Re: Single channel Plexi type, ideas?

Think you need to narrow it down some more. Although they are similar in volume, there are some pretty significant tonal differences between a 30-watt 4xEL84 and a 50-watt 2xEL34.

For a good non-boutique 4xEL84, check out the Genz Benz Black Pearl. (Brent Mason's endorsing it.)

For a 50-watter how 'bout a Vintage Modern? The KT66's might actually be better for bluesy stuff than EL34s.

The Marshall VM doesn't really seem quite like what I am looking for, I really haven't heard anything good about it.

Between KT66s, EL34s and EL84s, which produce a better cleanish type tone that isn't squishy but is still tight sounding?

Any videos of Brent Mason playing the BP?

Don't know. There's a demo video on G-B's website, but I don't know if it's Brent doing. I saw him in a full-page ad for it in the latest GP. I haven't played the Black Pearl (it's more power than I need) but GP loved it, and I know it's very versatile for a single-channel amp. Lots o' switches for tweaking.

Bluesguy, didnt you have the marshall dsl 401 not long ago? Why dont you tell us what you think of the amps, and what you dont like. Then we can talk... seems like all you do is spin your wheels on the forum but we never know what you conclude to.

cornford harlequin

6 watt 1x12 combo.. they look and sound pretty cool!

Re: Single channel Plexi type, ideas?

Cornford Hellcat or Cornford MK50!! You won't EVER need another amp!

Re: Single channel Plexi type, ideas?

You know, the Sovtek Mig 50 is real close to a 50 watt Marshall plexi. Kind of a cross between a 50 watt Marshall, JTM-45 and a tweed Bassman circuit. They sound really good and they're cheap...especially purchased used. Lew

If I wasn't gigging, I'd stop at one amp: the 65 London. Such as sweet amp, and two great sounds. I'm intrigued to hear the bigger wattage Marquee, though I'm not sure it can get any better than the London. I'm constantly thinking of ways I can gig that amp...

Can someone confirm that in the description, the only issue mentioned is a damaged preamp tube and that the amp is fine itself? So all I would have to do is replace that preamp tube and I should be golden?

Hey bud, I don't think you actually need to replace anything immediately... looks like it's working fine at the moment! It sounds like a bargain at that price... I mean that's only £500, I wish we had deals like that over here in the U.K! Good luck.... if you go for it don't forget sound clips!

Re: Single channel Plexi type, ideas?

David Bray modded Marshall 1959 or 1987x. He can add all the extra gizmos.

Re: Single channel Plexi type, ideas?

Get a Metropolis 100watt head and add a post-phase inverter master volume. Internally jumper the two channels, and in one of the unused jacks put a switch that switches between a stock plexi and the two channels cascaded. Also, don't forget to snip the bright cap on the bright channel.

I don't see any 50-watter for sale at the Metropoulos site, but I know he has them available in kit form.

Re: Single channel Plexi type, ideas?

The VM is a ***** to EQ but it can get some sweet tones, from blues to shredding. I like the clean on it a lot, but In portland they had it cranking out EVH at a comfortable volume.

...very intriguing!

Would this be a good choice for some heavier Blues stuff?
