Single Coil for Jagmaster

Hello,

I am thinking about putting a single coil in my Squier Jagmaster. Will any single coil work? Is string spacing an issue? I was considering the quarter pound and noticed they have one for the Jaguar. If I went with the quarter pound would I choose the one for Strat or Jag?? Thanx for any input!

Re: Single Coil for Jagmaster

It depends how the cavity under the pickguard is routed. I'd imagine it's probably got the "universal rout" or swimming pool type cavity, in which case you could experiment with several sizes/types/styles of singles coils...as long as you can mount them on a pickguard that fits the guitar. Since it's already a humbucker-sized cut-out in the Jagmaster, I would probably try a Phat Cat (P-90 in humbucker size/shape housing). Or if you want some versatility, without too much swapping, a P-Rail would fit there and give you three pick-ups in one.

Yeah, it is the swimming pool route. My concern is mostly the string spacing. I don't want to install a pickup that doesn't line up properly with the strings. If any single coil will work then my options are wide open, if not then .... I dunno.

Re: Single Coil for Jagmaster

The string spacing shouldn't be too much of a problem on the Jagmaster. You could probably do a custom pickguard and get a cool angled pickup look to it as well.

Re: Single Coil for Jagmaster

If the spacing isn't an issue I am almost golden. I am planning on cutting the hole for the single coil myself. However, I have heard some horror stories about cutting pickguards, so I may have to with a custom job.

Re: Single Coil for Jagmaster

I've never cut up a pickguard. I imagine a fast moving very sharp blade would do the trick. Give it a shot and post some pics. Jagmasters are a guilty pleasure of mine and I'd be interested in seeing someone's customized versions.

Re: Single Coil for Jagmaster

You should be able to get a pickguard cut for single coils and spacing should not be a problem. The QP's have wide enough poles that they work with nearly any spacing.

Magnetic pull is usually strong enough to sense your strings even if the poles don't line up perfectly -- the normal-spaced CustomCustom in my Strat SHOULD technically be Trembucker-spaced but it works and sounds fine.

That said, the Phat Cat P90 is an EXCELLENT pickup and would require the least amount of work to get your desired results. I love it in my SG but since that's my 'metal' guitar i'm gonna swap the CC from the Strat into the SG and vice versa...making my Strat S/S/S without getting a new pickguard.

Designed for fitting single coil pickups onto humbucker mounts. I have definitely thought about getting one of these and putting a Twangbanger in my SG-X :smokin:

You can find 'em here and they're like $20 less than a custom pickguard.
