Single coil guitar recommendation

Looking for a single coil guitar for tracking/live backup guitar purposes, as there's a possibility of me playing live in a new band with already 2 guitars.

A Telecaster is my first choice, but I wonder if there's anything else out there. Something to help cover treble frequencies on a low gain sound, pickup recommendation would be cool too but I guess that's one for the other section.

Drop C (sometimes B) / Metalcore/Post-hardcore/Pop punk styles.

Maybe 13-62 strings?

I have a Stratocaster Deluxe with a button to turn the bridge pickup on and off. I know there are pots for that now. I can approach Tele territory with that and SSL-1s

This will be my first choice then, the Chapman ML-3 : http://www.chapmanguitars.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/ml3rcb.jpg

Not heard of Chapman before, thanks for the link, they look pretty good! They look pretty Tele-like so I wonder if the feel is the same.

If putting a thicker gauge string on though I'll have to adjust those saddles?

Re: Single coil guitar recommendation

I would think anything that is a either a stacked humbucker or single-coil size humbucker would work- I think the hum would be overbearing with that much gain and a low tuning. My first thought is a BG1400.

It would not hurt to play with the intonation once you put such big gauge on.

Re: Single coil guitar recommendation

Reverend Guitars would be my weapon of choice here. True single cool or one of their HB models - Reverend's bass contour knob gives a LOT of tonal flex.

I wouldn't want a high output pickup, nor will I be using high gain. Yesterday I rehearsed with the other 2 guitarists and had a crunchy low gain setting. Used another telecaster with 10's as I didn't know if it'd work or not. It sounded pretty good, no hum or noise.

Re: Single coil guitar recommendation

Hmm, then in that case, I'd go with a Five Two bridge. It isn't talked about a lot, but I love the sound blend of the different magnets here.

Re: Single coil guitar recommendation

Is the Five Two a bit more vintage sounding than others? I wonder if a more old school crunch would compliment the modern high gain well.

Re: Single coil guitar recommendation

Well, it is more vintage sounding on the low strings, and sweeter on the higher strings. It sounds great with a level of overdrive that still allows dynamics- you still get the power on the lower strings, though.

Re: Single coil guitar recommendation

Hmm, just want enough gain so if I hit hard there's some grit, but not over-powering. I might be doing some clean picking parts so maybe it'd go well, I want octaves to leap out a bit too.

Re: Single coil guitar recommendation

Yeah, I like the Five Two. It sounds really great with a just-breaking-up Fender or TS-level of overdrive. Very dynamic, and not ice-picky. The low strings sound like a piano, I like it!

Re: Single coil guitar recommendation

Telecaster with Fishman Greg Koch signature pickups I think this gives more excellent single coil tones than anything else I can think of here is a little sample from my stuff to give you an idea. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B16vFLHhpubXZ2FrZ2pmbTVEclU/view?usp=sharing You should also look at the Greg Koch demos on youtube he gets alot more than I ever could out of these pickups but you will see what the Telecaster is capable of and to me it is capable of more great tones than any other single coil guitar out there. Here is a Greg Koch sample

Very nice sounding tele! Very crisp on the cleans and on a slightly crunchy sound you get that bite.

I think I will definitely go with that guitar, as I like how it plays. Also if I do any cleans it'll sound chimey-er.
I can use my humbucker one if I need some thicker tones too.
