Single coil humbucker users

Pardon my ignorance, but I've never had the need to look into using single coil HBs. I'm just wondering if they achieve most of what the full size versions have to offer?

I'm looking to get a single coil brobucker and I'm wondering if I should get it in a single coil size or mini hum possibly. The guitar in question is a melody maker and I'd like to avoid routing the body for a humbucker.

the smaller the form factor the less of the string the pup "hears" they do great things with single coil sized buckers but ive never heard one that sounded like a full size version

I've found they are great particularly for the neck slot. Something like the cool rails gives a nice non-muddy vintage humbucker type tone to a HSS guitar without the problems of vol/tonal change to a hot bridge humbucker.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a "compromise" per se. Just a different tone. I prefer the Cool Rails to many full-sized HB'ers. It's just a question of finding what works for you. The Trading Post is your friend.

Are you talking P-90 or Stratocaster sized?

Calling them 'Little', 'lil' or 'Jr' is about correct. They don't sound like regular-sized humbuckers because they physically can't. They have have their own thing going on with the essential flavor of the full-size version.

IMO, if you go the single coil sized humbucker route, get something with rails/blades instead of the twelve tiny screws. All the of the rails/blades humbuckers I've tried, Seymour Duncan's Vintage Rails, Bardens and DiMarzio's Chopper, Norton S, etc. all have a broader, bigger tone than the "Little" series of humbuckers with the twelve screws. Plus you can bend the strings, and you won't get a volume drop off when the string is between the little screws.

They sound similar but not 100%.

I think they are great pickups, definitely worth giving a shot!

The only one I use is a hotrails which is not really a smaller version of anything. It is just a single coils sized humbucker.

I've always loved the sound and feel of that pickup and I can play any bridge stuff I need with that particular strat.

Through an overdrive and the red(iculous) channel of my Road King, it'll kill a full sized donkey at 20 paces.

+1 I have a Hotrails in my Tele. Those pickups will melt your face off with the right rig. Through the Marshall I get a full on metal vibe.

If that's a real vintage MM, I wouldn't mess with it. Mine had a sound I wish I could replicate. Tons of bite. Everybody's always looking for a sound to distinguish themselves from everybody else, well you've got it right there. Not too many people have a vintage MM.

I have a lil Demon in my LTD strat and it sounds very, very similar to a full size demon in a similar guitar. In all fairness though, everything sounds killer through a Road King.

It's a '63 MM (incoming NGD). I'm for sure keeping the original harness/pickguard, but I might change it out for a new tort. pickguard.

I was considering my options in case I bought a new pickup. If I decide to switch out to a single coil humbucker, seems like the consensus is to go with rails.
