Single coil suggestion

Hi!

I play an Ibanez S540FM (mahogny body/rosewood fretboard) with an H/S/H configuration.

Thinking about replacing the stock middle pickup to something else, but I'm really not sure with what...

What I want from it are sweet warm tones, good for clean playing. Also something that would be a good match with my other PU's (C5 bridge, jazz neck).

Suggestions?

Do the humbuckers split at positions 2 and 4?
Do you want something powerful to be used on it's on or something with less output (which might be better when used with split humbuckers)?
Do you know what sort of pots does the guitar use? my guess is 500k pots...

Re: Single coil suggestion

It's 500K pots.

I'm not much of a guitar tech, I really don't know whether they split or not.

Here's the original wiring diagram if that helps:

Im looking for something less powerful than the ones I have, something with a little more vintage vibe.

Re: Single coil suggestion

Here's an idea, it's the thing I have on my guitar, though the wiring is different... I still think it can be done...

Get a higher output single coil a Quarter Pounder or a SD Custom (with the S fretboard you probably need flat and not staggerd pups) and get a coil tapping option... you'll get less trebly tone when used on its own in the full option and Strat style tones (I won't say quack) when tapped and used with the split buckers...

What jazzerlbn said can be done with the left side of this 'otax' switch. Cool idea! A single coil sized humbucker like a little 59 would work too.

Re: Single coil suggestion

Yep... I'm not a fan of the Hot Rails or Lil Humbuckers (ceramic pups are not my favorite thing) but they also might do the trick- cool five way wiring when the Lil Humbucker splits at positions 2 and 4.
