marshall sounded best to me across all levels of gain.

I would have thought I'd preferred the engl over all of them. but as gain went up, the orange sounded better, as did the engl. boogie sounded a bit better at lower gain.

That's an eye opener! I really loved that video. Based on the sounds, it was always a Marshall vs EVH until the Orange went high gain. I'd go for the EVH easily though.

He isolated the preamps. I wish he ran the entire amps so we could've heard the real differences between them.

Yes but I think he was using using cab IRs, you should ask the guy if the Cab IR included a tube power amp and what speaker, he may have mentioned but I don't remember right now.

True, but different power amps sound different. Hell, the same power amp with different output transformers sound different.

I think there's plenty amp shootouts out there already. I think a preamp shootout was a great idea.

Since it was preamp only, too bad he didn't include a Rockman Sustainor or Distortion Generator. They have their own cabinet simulations however. He might have had to change his test to account for that.

This came the closest to what I think a good "shootout" should be. The only thing I would have done different would have been to tell you to cover the right side of the video while you listen

I probably would have picked 5150/Marshall/Mesa. Not sure which, if one would have consistently made my first choice.

But he REALLY made a serious point there. I am not saying the power amp wouldn't make a difference, but I wonder how much at non-explosion levels?

I REALLY like that he BOTH tried to make them sound the same and tested at max level.
