Hey guys, I did'nt know where to put this thread since it deals with guitars, amps, and tips, so I thought I'd try here.

What gear did Scotti Hill and Snake Sabo use in the early days. Mainly on the first and second album? I've been looking online but find different answers.

Also, for the song "I Remember You", there's the part at the end where you pull off from 15 to 12 on high e, 15 to 12 on b, and 15 to 14 on g strings, and repeat like 3 times really fast. For this part, do you guys pull each on separate, or bar your finger across the 12th fret? Any tips on playing this particular part?

I beleive this was discussed elsewhere. Their producer anso produced White Lion's Pride album- for most of Skid Row's first album the tone was a Steinberger with an EMG pickup into an ADA MP-1. That was used on I remember You by Scotti Hill. No one can really tell what else was used, I remember magazine articles when they first came out that indicated the guitars they were using at the time- Custom made Spectors, but no indication as to what they actually recorded with apart from the Steinberger

I haven't heard the song ever or atleast in a long time so I don't know what rythm or tempo that lick is at. I would barre the 12th and 14th frets with 1st and 2nd or 3rd finger and pull off with your 3rd or 4th depending on your preference.

If its the lick thats at about 4:40 in the song, then it goes like this (i think?) (i only listened to it once)

-15-12-10-----------
-----------15-12-10- x3

And they are triplets.
Put your pinky, middle and index on 15, 12, and 10 and do it with pull offs. Pick the first not you play on each string. Hope this helps.

I'm no expert, but I thought for sure he used a blue Carvin guitar in one of those old videos.

The Blue Double Cutaway?

I think it was actually a Spector.

Just watched the video a couple of times. It's a single pickup double cutaway with 3 x 3 headstock. In one see part of the Spector logo on the top of the headstock.

But if he was playing it in the video, that doesn't neccessarily mean he did in the studio right?

I made no reference to what was and what was not used in the studio....simply taking the time to make an observation based on a video I knew had a blue guitar in it that kinda resembled a Carvin.

It was a blue Spector Scotti Hill was playing in I remember You. Snake Sabo had a black Les Paul shaped guitar in 18 and life, I think I saw a Red Hamer Explorer too. I think the Spectors were also in the Youth Gone Wild Video.

That's so funny, coz there are factory presets on the MP-1 that totally cop Skid Row tones, like the "18 & Life" clean sound (I think it's #4 )

They definitely played Spectors.

They also used Soldanos on the "Slave to the Grind" record.

When I saw them a few years ago, Scotti was playing some kind of unfinished Superstrat mutt that looked like it had been on the road for at least a decade. They kicked ass, even without Sebastian.

That's why my number one, totally silly, probably will never do buy it, but still want it really badly anyway, piece of gear is:

an ADA MP-1

Some things just never go out of style.

Slave to the Grind at the time was reported as being mostly Rivera amps according to the band. I cannot believe there's much Soldano on that album unless it was Post Eq'd VERY heavily.

There is a forum member here who has "Red Molly"...which is a Hamer Standard just like Snakes.

Skid Row was a great band...one of the few American Hair Metal acts worth a damn, IMO. Sebastian is one of my fave vocalists.

Not completely American... Sebastian is from Peterborough & his brother is a pro hockey goalie. My buddy was friends with them way back.

The guy who produced the first record & Slave to the Grind; Michael Wagner...is a buddy of mine.

If ya'll ask REAL nice & I remember (50/50 shot!) the next time I talk to him I can ask specific questions if there are any...he's also a moderator at www.gearslutz.com which is an audio/recording board & you can probably search half of this stuff over there too!

I know the first Skid Row record was recorded in an old Playboy mansion somewhere in the midwest...HUGE HUGE room. They had an vintage car auction in there a few days before they moved in & setup shop to record. I recall him saying something about the band not being able to see the drummer & they had to use video cameras for visual communication.

MW also produced a TON of that 80s sht that we all love...White Lion, Dokken...Warrent...Extreme...mixed a BUNCH of other things including Master of Puppets & some Ozzy stuff like "No More Tears"!!! Just look at the credits on the records...crazy!

Anyway...I know for a FACT that almost all of the '80s records like Skid Row, Extreme & White Lion were tracked with the guitar players using an ADA MP1 going to an H&H power amp & a couple three cabinets that were miked up six ways to Sunday.

And really...NONE of those records have the same guitar tones even though the EXACT same MP1, power amps & cabinets etc. were used.

The tone is in the hands!
