Skid Row rhythm & lead tones - which pickup?

Been listening a lot to Skid Row and Slave to the Grind lately and really digging the rhythm tones the guys are getting on those albums. The awesome riffs don't hurt either :)

Anyway, I did a search on the forum and there seemed to be quite a few replies to what pickups would achieve Scott Hill's rhythm tone. Some said XN2's, a couple said EMGs. Any SD choices out there? I was originally thinking about putting the PG/CC combo in (like the lead tone too), but thinking the CC might not be powerful enough (maybe a custom?). Same with the PG for leads too?

Whatcha think?

They both used the JB exclusively back in the day. That's only part of their tone. I believe their racks were Sound City power amps, ADA MP-1 preamps and Marshall 4x12 cabs. Can't remember for sure.

Slave is tonally one of my favorite albums and when I describe my tonal goals to people it's always one of the albums I mention. Anyway, from what I remember reading they were using JBs. The main amp on Slave was not the ADA MP-1 rig as used on the first Skid album yet it was a boosted (via screamer or similar) Rivera M100.

I've always wanted to find one of those amps but never had any luck and when they did pop up I never had the spare cash for it.

A JB or a Dimarzio Super Distortion would work.

Thanks for the thoughts guys.

Picking up a Charvel Pro Mod when the backorder gets fulfilled. Alder body/maple neck with stock 59 and JB. I had an old LP clone with a JB before but never quite liked it, so was thinking of swapping it out. Course I'll play it through my rig now and see - might be surprised.

Anybody have any thoughts on the neck pickup?

Which colour? I'm gonna buy the white San Dimas soon.

LOOOOOVE the tone on "Slave to the Grind", and I too remember hearing they were all about JBs in the day...

Mine too. Snow white looks dead sexy. Never got into superstrats much but its just too sleek to pass up...

you dont have to convince me!

JB/59 for the initial trial. Depending on your taste you can swap magnets later on.

JB in a mahogany guitar is not for everyone but it is a beast in Alder.

I've always loved the guitar tones Skid Row has gotten.

Because someone had to be the exception to the rule...

Who DIDN'T use a JB in the 80's?

Pretty sure just me alone... Only because I was using DDs...at least I kept it in the family, right? :friday:

Scotti Hill's messed up looking strat (the one w/ no finish left on it and has had a couple different necks on it) has always been my favorite look (the rest of his look... not so much):

I love the last one w/ the single coil stuck in the neck humbucker spot...

A Dimarzio Megadrive would be a pretty good candidate.
