Skid Row

Skid Row is one of my favorite bands and I love their guitar tone. On Skid Row they used an ADA MP-1 into a solid state power amp (McIntosh?) - the same rig that Nuno Bettencourt and Vito Bratta used, same settings and everything. On Slave to the Grind they used Riveras. Here are some posts by Michael Wagener about the MP-1:

That was some killer reading. Thanks bro!!

One of my favourite bands. Slave To the Grind (groin!!!) is a brilliant album all the way through. Cool heavy tones, sebastian is a kickass singer. So what happened? Where they caught up in grunge killing things off? I heard Sebastian was fired. Can anyone enlighten me? Ive only got into them in mid 2005 so don't really know their history.

Slave was a solid release. When it came out I don't really think it got the coverage it deserved

Well, Slave did debut #1 on the Billboard chart--first time for a Metal act IIRC-- and they got booked on SNL then. (IIRC Def Lep was the first Metal act to hit #1 on Billboard though). But yeah, Slave was a solid album, liked it mucho.

Re: Skid Row

I remember reading an old Guitar World many, many years ago (with Reb Beach on the cover) that profiled all the young guitarists at the time. At the time of the first album Snake was using an Ibanez Iceman with EMG's fed into a Marshall JCM800, and he had a few Spector guitars with PRS HFS pickups in them. Scotti Hill used the ADA MP1, and various Charvel, Jackson Strats, as well as Spectors all loaded with JB's.

Their tone did change alot for Slave to the Grind, but a JB into a tube screamer in front of a JCM800 will do it

Re: Skid Row

What early albums would you guys suggest if I wanted to check out killer Skid Row? I've only heard a handful of songs from them, all with Sebastian Bach.

Re: Skid Row

The first 2 albums- Skid Row and Slave to the Grind. Forget anything without Sabastian Bach. I saw them open up for Ted Nugent and Kiss a few years ago with the new singer. The band was good, but sounded horrible with the new singer- made them sound like a bad bar band.

It's also worth checking out a live Sabastian Bach CD- Bring Em Back Alive- after he left Skid Row he got a few musicians to do a show in Japan, doing Skid Row material and a few covers. Really shows the set of pipes that man has live in concert

Man, I've been riding around jamming on these dudes lately. I've been listening to Slave To The Grind. Scotti Hill and Dave Sabo got some absolutely killer guitar tones goin on here. I know they had some killer tones on their first CD as well. What kind of amps and gear did/do they use? I'm guessing some kind of ADA preamps or the like.

1st album: ADA MP1 & Groove Tubes preamp through Marshall heads & BBE's. Duncan JB's extensively.

2nd album: Rivera heads & cabs.

"I Remeber You" from the 1st album has one of my favorite solos & tones.

According to Sebastian (there are always three sides to every story) the rest of the band wanted to go more grunge, and he wanted to stick with the metal, so he split.
I always here about how there's bad blood between them, but I haven't heard anything else about it.
That's one band that I don't think we'll see on the summer reunion tour circuit!

Ya i caught that tour in Toronto.... i thought the boys in Skid Row did a great job..... the singer was different but i was hoping they would of recorded something with him so i could hear how he really sounded..... my hearing is F'd and sometimes in those big arena's i have a hard time hearing clearly.
