Slanted pickups - angled how do i solve it

Well basically im sure it doesnt effect the sound but heres the story:

My epi came with the stock pickups, i wasnt liking that so changed them for Gibson 490/498T then recently for my duncans. Since the first change (to the Gibsons), i have found the pickups to be angled. How would i straighten these?

Cheers in advance,

You mean angled as in one row of polepieces in the pickup sits lower than the other row?

If that's the case, you may be able to straighten them by cutting out some of the sponge that came in the pickup box, and putting this underneath the pickup to steady it. I've never done this myself, but I think some of the other guys on the forum have, they may be able to offer more advice on this.

Yeah, thats the prob! Cheers!

No problem, glad if I can help. One thing I will say though; remember that the neck is at an angle, so if you were to make the pickups perfectly straight, they may still be at an angle when you compare them with the strings.

Just means you'll need to play about with them a bit I suppose. But that's all part of the fun!

EDIT: some humbucker mounting rings are cut to different heights and have a slant to the side that makes contact with the guitar - maybe try using the original mounting rings?

Yeah i relised that, but the angle is a bit too much at the mo, im sure it doesnt make much difference if any at all to the sound but i want to make it line up a lil better! Cheers!

Duncan pickups when purchased new have some black or gray sponge in the jewel box. That sponge can be cut to the size of a humbucker and put in the bottem of the pickup rout in a guitar and are helpful in keeping the pickup straight and not tilted. Get some 1/2" to 3/4" thick sponge and try it. Good luck! Lew

I was just going to post about this exact same problem I am having with my Custom Custom in my Charvel Strat, when I saw this post.

Is this solution purely cosmetic, or does this angle (in my case, its angled/tilted toward the bridge) effect tone and output???

I would think you would want the coils parallel to the stings and not necessarily to the body, as would be the case with a LP type guitar with an angled neck.

I think a better idea is just thicker or longer springs. I think the sponge under the baseplate might dampen some of the vibration and change the tone some.

I had to do this with one of my Epi's. I had serious slant goin' on and resorted to using the foam idea. I didn't use the foam that came with my SD pup however, I used this piece of foam rubber i got for my home theater system. Its a thick, solid peice of foam rubber, its very dense, but has a small amount of dampening to it. Its actually a base or foot for subwoofers, its supposed to provide a small amount of cushioning with out losing any vibration so you still get the full effect of subwoofers etc... I thought this would be best for using in my LP, so I went with it and there is no percievable tone loss that I can hear. I figured a more solid peice of foam would help transfer body vibrations back to the pup. I don't know if this is true, I can't really hear any difference, but the gutiar sounds absolutely great and thats what matters...
