Slap back echo pedal?

Re: Slap back echo pedal?

Any delay pedal which can be set to a short setting. Any model from Boss, Rocktron, DigiTech, and many others should be fine.

Rocktron Short Timer is probably the best I've heard. Great pedal at an unheard of low price. When I had mine they were actually even cheaper! Mine got stolen, and I got a deal on a DD-3, but if anything happened to my DD-3, I'd definitely be back in the market for a short timer!

Hughes & Kettner Replex, but it's a large pedal.

Re: Slap back echo pedal?

For slapback, I like the crappier pedals best. I want the repeated sound to be almost nothing like the original sound tonally. I want it to be like a multifaceted concrete wall giving my sound back to me, but like I'm outside in an alley or a schoolyard so there's no second repeat, and no room ambiance along with it. I had an Arion Stereo Analog Delay back in the day, and it was perfect for that. They reissued it, and I'm happy with the Tubulator, so by proxy I'd say I could recommend it, but I haven't seen or heard these reissues so I don't know. But for less than $30 my bet is that it will melt your face off.

Again, we're totally talking personal preference. Some guys like the slap back tone to be an exact replica, like the Boss DDx pedals, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. A slapback tone that's an exact replica of the original sound is more reminiscent of old studio tricks, like doubling the track and physically delaying the second track, either because of staggered tape heads, or a delayed bounce. But creative miking of real slap back is more approximated with cheap analog delays IMO.

To me, the sound comes at you so fast that you don't need to analyze the complex tonal signature with a slapback echo the same way you would with a longer delay. It's more like you have to decide if you want it clean or dirty, expensive or cheapo. Slapback, unlike reverb or chorus for example, is an area where you can underspend and overperform IMO.

Analog delays provide that "warmth" Frank is describing. But nowdays, the demand for analog delays has led to a major jump in their prices. If the Arion is inexpensive, it may be worth snatching up. In general, if slapback is the main focus of interest, I would aim for something less expensive, since slapback is a more subtle effect than long delays with many repeats. I just happen to prefer digital delays for their precision and endless capabilities.

+1 on the Rocktron Short Timer. I got mine for $25 slightly used. It's digital, but designed intentionally for an analog-like lo-fi sound. Best deal out there. It's even big and green like the old MXR, but without the vintage price.

I the Short Timer, and it's great. The Line 6 Echo Park also does a pretty good slapback, and several other things, too.

Check out October "Vintage Guitar Magazine" for some reviews of delay pedals.
