I had a friend back in the day that said everything after Reign sounds like they got rid of Tom and replaced him with Sam Kinison. Wonder if that's why I only have the albums up to Reign.

Metallica has been sloppy and just awful since Black, Sucks because I'm burnt out on the first 4 cds (5 is you want to be technical)

My guess is Super Distortion, and it wouldn't have been an EMG 81 as he didn't start using them until Seasons in the Abyss with the ESP guitars originally. I remember this as right as rain and like it was yesterday. I was looking at a magazine and shaking my head seeing KK with an ESP... and with him going bald...

HAHAHAHA!!!!!!! I remember how shocked I was too when he shaved, and now 18 years later, I had to so the same for the same reason, if the ain't hair on your head
growing anymore, and your a metal head, then shave it! :eek2:

Oh man, that record is horrible.


I'm being honest when I say that Divine Intervention is my favorite next to Reign in Blood. Bostaph is killing it on that record. Both are all timers for me.

I won't get into a discussion of best Slayer albums (I like GHUA but nothing after) I will just say their guitar tone has been awful since Seasons in the Abyss onwards and gets worse with every album to the extent it completely ruins the music for me. WPB might be their best album ever, I just can't get past the stupid guitar sound. No balls whatsoever.

Even though I too like the album WPB, I must add this.... I have Guitar World interviews that the producer for WPB mixed (AND THIS BE A CURRENT FAB) the JCM 800 heads + Cabs with..... wait for it... ORANGE HEAD and cabs, for what???? To get... wait for it.... more STRING SEPERATION sound from the guitars for more 'Clarity'....

WTF???? Thats what Passive Pickups do naturaly, and no producer has the right to screw up the natural Slayer sound of the JCM800, but trying to make EMGs more clear and string seprated is like sitting in a Ford Falcon and hitting the Warp Speed button..........:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

I'm going to play devil's advocate hear and say, maybe we are assuming that thier live rigs are he same rigs they used to record. Maybe they used different stuff in the studio. But anyway, if you look at that youtube vid of Kerry talking about his JCM 800 he stated that he started using the 800's in late 80's, which is after RIB was released. I love thier guitar tone on almost all their albums. I think they hit the nail on the head on Christ Illusion, and South of Heaven is a close second, World Painted Blood is kick ass too and live they bury anybody.

When did Hetfield use an Invader? I thought he used stock Gibsons (500/498) on KEA, RTL and MOP, then EMG from Justice on.

He used the invader on Ride the Lightning. He started using EMG's during the RTL tour

When did Hetfield use an Invader? I thought he used stock Gibsons (500/498) on KEA, RTL and MOP, then EMG from Justice on.

He put one in his white V copy during the RTL tour and recorded MOP with it, then switched to EMG's for AJFO.

"I got my white V in 1980, " James Hetfield recalls. "It was the second guitar I ever owned, and I probably bought it for $200. I knew it was a copy, but we treated it as a real Gibson. I wanted a white one because Michael Schenker of U.F.O. had one, so I needed one, too. The neck snapped on it twice on tour. It's been glued quite a few times. It's got Seymour Duncan pickups in it, with a little more output for the crunch than the originals had. The only other thing that's customized is the artwork [laughs]. That was the first guitar I started scratching stuff into."

To me, World Painted Blood is a great album, but the guitars sound *dry*.

This picture is from the Country Club show Sept 7, 1985. They do look like Dimarzio Super Distortions.
