Sleeper Pedal ?

What pedals do you put infront of your boutique amp or main amp that people take a second look and say. "Hes using that pos? Damn that sounds good !"

Well I have an extensive pedal board and have spent a **** load of money on boutique pedals. Lately I have been going through my rig and pedal collection and revisiting some old throw aways. Now that I am getting more into recording my stuff and not going to the studio I am finding these little gem pedals that I overlooked before, its got me quite excited.

Overdrive: Boss OD3 (this pedal has a really almost SHOD sound when cranked and at lower drive settings has a really nice transparent sound.I know its not true bypass but to be honest I love the boss buffer so it doesn't bother me having one boss pedal on my board.)

Delay: EHX Memory toy (this is just a really great little delay pedal it hasnt replaced my Nova delay because it doesnt have the versatility and tap tempo I need but for what it is sounds great.)

If you guys have any more good sleeper pedals let me know would love to try them out. Its really nice to find a pedal you love with out spending a few hundred dollars.

Re: Sleeper Pedal ?

Yes, I have one.... a real sleeper and really overlooked pedal. It was DanElectro's attempt at high end pedals that never caught on. The Wasabi series. The Overdrive pedal which had so many options and controls. 5 different tonal options, a separate boost circuit, input selection for humbuckers and single coils. It is fantastic in front of a amp. Strange looking, or retro if that is a term for this one. Oh, forgot to mention, these pedals weigh about 3 lbs. That's real steel under that silver paint. The only negative is the jacks, surface mounted to the board. No trouble with mine so far, but if I were to pick a negative, that would be it. They do sound good, worth the $40 or $50 bucks you can pick them up on Ebay for.

Re: Sleeper Pedal ?

WOW! Wasabi is far-out!

My sleeper is the Boss Combo Drive. $99, a very different pedal from the tubescreamer variants. Its got a nice AC30 type chime and a big bottom. Kind of the opposite of the mid-push TS9 type. Sounds good with the gain barely cracked open or wide-open. Not a metal petal but can get into raging Queen type power chords.

Re: Sleeper Pedal ?

Danelectro COOL CAT Stereo Chorus. One of the best, IMO. Sounds fabulous through two amps in stereo. There's one on Ebay right now for $37.

Re: Sleeper Pedal ?

I have a Cool Cat Tremolo that I like alright, but my "secret weapon" is a Joyo Sweet Baby, Joyo's take on the Mad Professor Sweet Honey. It's a great sounding transparent overdrive that I keep on about 95% of the time. The only time it goes off is when I need a sparkly clean sound. Cost me $25.

Re: Sleeper Pedal ?

well, noone says its a "POS", but I have some OOP Duncan pedals, that arent very valuable in the used market that sound killer; Twealk Fuzz and Power Grid.

Re: Sleeper Pedal ?

Wasabi looks really interesting, looks like a lot of options and control. Do you have any clips ?

Ive been searching for a Boss OD1 for a good deal for a while now , my time will come.

Re: Sleeper Pedal ?

I bought an Ibanez Fz7 off AmpliFIRE and it's awesome! It gets a great 90s fuzz, and the damage mode gets an instant bitcrusher effect. I was even getting some sunn O)) tones out of it. My friend, who I got it for as a christmas gift, ran it through his univibe and whammy II to devastating effect. They're dirt cheap and sound amazing -- I am gonna buy one for myself now :p

Re: Sleeper Pedal ?

I use a Black Label Chorus pedal pretty much all of the time. I love the way it sounds when I put an overdrive or fuzz into it (Swollen Pickle Fuzz or MXR Classic Overdrive).

Re: Sleeper Pedal ?

My secret weapon would have to be my Boss SD-1. It's pretty much set up to boost and add a tiny bit more gain to my sound, best thing is it doesn't really change up my tone too much. I'm loving this thing!

Re: Sleeper Pedal ?

Washburn Stack-In-A-Box distortion pedal. Highly underated 80's classic.

Re: Sleeper Pedal ?

Digitech Bad Monkey for me.

It's 1 of the few boosts I've found that I actually like with my Splawn, it's beat out alot more expensive pedals that I own in this role.

I really like boss pedals they are really underrated and used quite a bit by pros.

I love the Boss CE-2 pedal such a good chorus pedal also I think everyone that is a pedal enthusiast has had a Boss Delay on their board at one time or another I have had about 4

Ive heard so much about the bad monkey and still have never had an opportunity to try it, I need to check it out at some point hear nothing but good reviews.

Re: Sleeper Pedal ?

Ibanez SmashBox (SM7). I think it's what the Metal Zone should have been.

Boss DS-1. If you take the time to dial it in and listen to what it's doing in response to your playing, you can wring some really nice tones out of it. And it makes a killer boost for a crunchy amp channel.

Seymour Duncan Power Grid. I've heard a few players say it sounds something like the old Marshall Shredmaster pedal. If that's true, the Marshall pedal deserves that reputation it seems to have.

Ibanez Tubes Creamer (TS7). Another 7-series Ibanez pedal. I thought this one sounded really close to the TS9 reissue that's been around for like, most of forever. Good enough on its own merits that it needs no excuses or apologies.

There is nothing "sleeper" about the bad Monkey. It is awesome period.
