Slutty guitar feels stiff....

Re: Slutty guitar feels stiff....

Strings?; I thought about that too. Too lazy to change them so I looked up where my guitar was shipped with D'Addarios 9 gauge. They did feel stiff though-maybe they were old?. I dont think its springs, as my floyd is set up right ands has soft travel or whatever you call it. I need to try new strings
Its not frets, my frets are excellent. Strings might be worth a try.

Re: Slutty guitar feels stiff....

Hahahaha . If it turned out to be the strings all along we will look like complete donuts. Me more than you as I made a thread whining about why my guitar when the strings were rusty.... I wont get my hopes up though just in case I'm still left disappointed with the new strings. But its a good idea nevertheless !

Re: Slutty guitar feels stiff....

If I do slow motion vibrato on the b string it feels like its grating/rubbing/dragging against some resistance, and I can even hear this rubbing noise through my amp...

I didn't read all the answers but here's my 3 cents:
-after having been leveled, the frets need to be polished to a mirror shine. Seems your guitar needs this area addressed.
-the tremolo springs have a fundamental impact on the string feel (and tone, too). I use Schallers.
-strings aren't perfect. Sometimes they oxidate on the surface and become rough themselves. Some brands feel stiff.

Apart from that, I suggest that you don't lower the action beyond 1.2mm over the twelfth fret. If you do, you'll almost certainly kill the strings' fundamental mode of vibration and also make bending, vibrato and string muting harder for yourself.

Re: Slutty guitar feels stiff....

After leveling you need to crown (make them round again), then polish. Whether a metal polish already does the work after crowing depends, steel wool might be needed, but don't use actual steel wool because the loose fibers will get attached to pickups and never leave.

Re: Slutty guitar feels stiff....

Hmmm My luthier already did this all for me originally though... and they are both brand new guitars (3 months old now) so I really think its unlikely that the frets are sharp/scratched. Maybe they can do with a little re-polish/scrub and the strings need changing. I'll take it to him first and see what he can do for me. (Mr. Tim Ellis from Wales, builds and sells custom guitars (TC Ellis) as well as repairs, setups, mods etc.) :)

You are sure you got a fret level/crown/polish?

Also, there are cases when frets are leveled and then not crowed. There was a period where you could pick up brand new Gibsons in that state. Was pretty much right before they went with what they say is pleking.

Re: Slutty guitar feels stiff....

Yes I took it to my luthier for a complete set up and fret dressing! Weirdly enough, I played her tonight and she wasnt too stiff... Hmmm maybe its because my house is like below 0. Freezing cold up here at the moment and my hands have been ice cold. They were warmed up tonight and it wasnt so bad. haha ... gona change the strings and have given her some lemon oil and a polish. Should be fine :)

Re: Slutty guitar feels stiff....

I will have to see. Its funny Ive had my gibson SG for 7 years, and whenever its felt crappy or the strings have gone bad i've just been like Screw this guitar !! But when it happened to my new one maybe I panicked a bit because I just had her set up.... She seems ok again for now. Hope the new strings and some decent blood flow to my hands can be the start of great things to come ! haha

Re: Slutty guitar feels stiff....

I'm betting $100 that no actual level/crown/polish was done.

Re: Slutty guitar feels stiff....

Dude, just replace your strings already. While replacing them take some painters tape and cover your fretboard and pickups (yes, pickups) and polish up the frets with 0000 steel wool... yes, actually do it with steel wool, just tape the pickups and you will have no problems. Then put the new strings on and tune up, see how she feels.

This takes an hour max and could save you a ton of heartburn and complaining on the forum...

EDIT: I don't mean to sound like a dick, but you still haven't done the most basic of tips given here and the thread continues. Help yourself out here and take the advice and see if it helps.

I think he did already. He should be good for another two years now.:31:

Hmmm , you are worrying me. Do you think he would too lazy to do it ?? I ****ing hope not considering its what he advertises/offers it, not to mention that I paid for it... What do you reckon ?

Not the most fancy website I know, but you think he didnt service the frets properly ?? He repaired and set up Lemmy from motorheads bass guitars and makes/sells custom builds for people so I'd like to think he actually did what I asked...

No, that looks reputable. So you payed for all that and then ended up with a guitar that was uncomfortable to play?
