sm-3 mini humbuckers in a prs se standard

Just wanting to know if anyone has any suggestions on getting the best sound possible out of them? They sound great but they don't have the warmth or sweetness I was expecting. I expect it's a matter of changing the capacitor; I assume there's specific capacitors I could switch in to get the tone I should be hearing...

Capacitors don't have an effect on the tone when they are at 100% on the tone control. As you roll the tone knob down the only effect that the cap has is how much high end is rolled off, this is determined by the electrical value.

Have you tried messing around with pickup height? If that doesn't work, what you can do is go for a lower value volume pot, try a 300k instead of the 500k you most likely have in their now.

Welcome to the forum.

Firebird minis don't have a ton of warmth, to be honest. I use SM-1's in a couple of guitars and in all of them they tend to be somewhat between a PAF and a fender style single in terms of voicing. With that said, you can do certain things to warm them up. If you have 500k pots all around, you could perhaps swap in a 300k or 250k pot as a tone control. That should shave off some high end.

Changing the pickup height did add some better tonal qualities to them. Any other suggestions?

use a 250k pot as the tone control and see what you think. thatll tamp down the high end. if you like the result but its not enough, swap a 250k for the volume as well. fb pups are bright by nature but can be very musical pups when dialed in right

For me, fiirebirds are very distinctive... Bright, articulate, great attack... With 3 pups, I often substitute a mini in the bridge or neck...

If its a bright guitar, a mini in the bridge warms up the bridge and balances wonderful with fbs.

If I need less bite and more growl, I'll switch out a mini in the neck with p90s as a great alternative.

Almost always keep the FB in the middle for quack in 2 and 4 positions.
