small tube combo + distortion pedal = good?

Re: small tube combo + distortion pedal = good?

I have the 200 dollar one and its loud enough to keep up with a drummer in a small gig setting (bar, coffee shop)

Lol, death metal in a coffee shop! Only in America!

Re: small tube combo + distortion pedal = good?

Unlike a tube amp, you can't hit a digital device harder and push it into more saturation. All you do is produce digital clipping which is quite unmusical (even for death metal lol)

Erm... you can certainly use some boost into the front of a modeller and it'll give you more saturation. Not to the same extent as a valve amp, perhaps, but you really do have to hit them hard to get digital clipping, especially as almost all have an analogue limiter on the front end specifically to prevent that.

Re: small tube combo + distortion pedal = good?

im very anti spyder III, i might consider flextones or Vetta II's but no spider.

My Spider II sounded awesome. Sadly to say, I have a tube amp and some decent pedals now, and sometimes try to chase after some of the old Spider II tones. Plus since I sold my Spider Combo, I"m thinking of buying the Head that was just like it. Thier cheap and do sound decent.

if you screw with it long enough yeah, but im not that patient to go thru 300+ presets to only end up with 3 tones. Icky

Re: small tube combo + distortion pedal = good?

I LOVE MY CRANKED AC15 WITH EITHER FUZZ, OR OVERDRIVE !!!

The only Dist. pedal i have is a Turbo Rat, and that sounds fantastic too . . .

It is imho, but you can not beat a small/low wattage (15W & below...) all valve amp and some of your fav. dirt box (fuzz for me) infront of said low wattage amp !

My ultimate wet-dream will look (on B&W :D any way) like this :

My Gibbo MM 0r Dano '59 into a Super Fuzz 0r Tonebender into a Nick Greer Underdog Mod-1 (modded 5e3 tweed)

WOW . . .

Re: small tube combo + distortion pedal = good?

i play death metal. so that pretty much rules it out.

In that case, you want an ORANGE TT :firing:

I am sure (after lurking on the Orange forum for months) that the TT will have enough gain for your Death Metal.
NO need for a dirt box.
Just add a boost 0r OD pedal (...or both) and a 2x12 cab and you are good to go !!! - FACT !

Re: small tube combo + distortion pedal = good?

I say get a Vox Valvetronix XL

Oh hell yes

. . . if you can not afford the TT, as i decribed above, then you NEED one of these !!! PERIOD mate !!!
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Vox-Valvetronix-AD30VTXL30W-1x12-Guitar-Combo-Amp?sku=483004

Just read the spec's !
My church has a 30W, not the high-gain XL, but the "regular" one and it is very very good.

For Death Metal, and any other metal sub-genre, THIS is the way to go.
For $300.00 you are NOT going to beat this price.
Do yourself a big favour & test one asap.
PS...the more you crank thses Vox's the better they sound !

My 2 cents

Re: small tube combo + distortion pedal = good?

i disagree with the notion that valve jr's arent capable of death metal. i had one and all i used it for was metal! basically just turn the volume all the way up so you get all that preamp and poweramp distortion and use a high output pickup. With a hot rails in my strat the amp sounded pretty sick. i used an equalizer pedal as a solo bost, made leads really scream and harmonics were jumping all over the place

those were good times

You don't have to. Just turn the knobs and set the amp up yourself, save the channel, easy. A great thing about the digital amps is that once you set a channel, it's THERE - you don't have to worry about remembering where all the knobs go. If you want to try different settings you can, but you can go back to your default "sweet spot" with the push of a button. And with the Spider you get 4 channels - clean, crunch, two high gain. Hard to beat for awesome tone at lower volumes - and like I said, my 30 watt one can keep up with a drummer, moreso if I elevate it or put it on a chair. Even a 5 watt tube amp has to be **** loud to sound its best.

Re: small tube combo + distortion pedal = good?

id still go for a small solid state amp- cheaper small wattage tube amps arent going to get you the tightness you need for that music, and cheaper tube amps don't sound any better than cheaper SS amps to my ears- I think they use the word 'tube' to sell more of them, but cheap is cheap.

No offense mate but if you can't be bothered to go through 300 presents or adjust your amp, how can you be bothered to start a ton of threads asking for all this advice on amps ?

You do realize as well that they do name and categorize the presets so you really wouldn't have to go through the clean ones, just call up the grindy stuff and your set.

300 presets seems like a godsend for someone who doesn't want to take the time to dial in their amp to me

I'd generally have to agree with this, plus this thread is making me miss mine a little.

Re: small tube combo + distortion pedal = good?

I would say for 5 bills looks at the Valvetronix XL amps.

The models are going to be geared more towards what you're playing right off the bat. It's an amp designed to do almost specifically what you are looking to be doing without the huge price tag assocated with the rectifiers.

For under 5 bills you can get the AD50VT-XL which will work for everything from bedrooms to mid-size bars and clubs.

That's an amp you can grow with for a good long while.
