smaller amp and other possible solutions

As a few of you guys know, my wife and I are expecting a little girl in December. So, I have a few problems. First of which is my route 66 (it is currently for sale) I love it, and I love the sound but it is just too loud. I am thinking about getting a greer studio 10 and running a kt66 in there. I am also thinking about getting an attenuator to tame the route 66 what do you guys think? should I get one first, and which ones should I look at?

Re: smaller amp and other possible solutions

My favorites are my modded Fender Princeton Reverb and Deluxe Reverb. Best amps I've ever owned. They bear little resemblence to original Fenders though - Bruce pretty much stripped the circuit board, replaced the trannys, and redesigned them into 18 - 22 watt Fender/Marshall/Vox amps with Fender reverb. Now if I can just get him to market them as a whole new amp! Lew

you'll regret selling the 66!

that prescription jr that Jump just bought sounds like the ticket to me!

Re: smaller amp and other possible solutions

Attenuator, I say. If you have a 2x12 try grabbing a 1x12 to cut down on overall volume.

Re: smaller amp and other possible solutions

The 66 sounds really good at low volume. A Weber MiniMass would probably work well for you.

Re: smaller amp and other possible solutions

I just played a Fender Blues Junior with a BB preamp...LOVE IT!

Awesome tone and no need to crank it up.

I know I will eventually regret selling such a great sounding amp, but little Lucy would not be able to hear after she turns two if I crank this thing up at all.

Re: smaller amp and other possible solutions

Try out the Mesa Express series. I have the 1x12 50w combo and it's switchable from 50w down to 5w. The 5w setting is great for small clubs as well as sleeping kids.

I've never heard of that one, any specs?

I tried an Express 5:50 when they came out, cool amp and really great concept...50 watts switchable to 5 with the flip of a switch but it's a much more modern voiced amp that the Dr. Z...

Not sure thats that you'd be looking for but it could be worth a look...

Re: smaller amp and other possible solutions

not looking for a modern sound at all, thanks. I do like the idea of a switch like the carr amps I tried that went way down in volume. great amps, too expensive.

Yeah, the Carr is GREAT, I like most Carr amps to be honest but they are too much money IMO...

The Mesa is a cool concept but I know what you want and the Mesa ain't it IMO...

What about the Mini Z...not a route 66 but still Z flavor and they are quite nice and I really don't care for EL84 tubes myself but I liked it!

Also, there is the Greer you're lookin at...

Also, a 5E3 is still a nice sounding amp thats not a lot of power, truth is if you stick to an alnico Jensen style speaker in a 5E3 it's not really loud at all...those amps get loud (sorta!) with more efficient speakers in them but in stock trim...not too loud at all!

Re: smaller amp and other possible solutions

the 5E3 is probably a good way to go, with the greer and my little dawg, I should have most american voiced amps covered. That would really do it for me. I think that will probably be the way I lean. I also need a new cab and volume pot for my little champ.

Similar but the reverb circuit, even when it's on zero, contributes a lot to the tone of an amp that's laid laid out Fender style. The reverb circuit can be tweaked to add gain and fullness to the tone. It's not just for reverb.

Bruce's aurora circuit is laid out more like a Vox and the reverb is not typical Fender reverb. It's excellent but it's placed at a different point in the circuit than it was by Leo. Dr Z. had the same dillema when adding reverb to his amps.

it's good to know, thanks Lew. I actually prefer no reverb on my amps probably because it has always effected the tone.

Re: smaller amp and other possible solutions

sounds like a mission amps 5e3 is the ticket. I just don't know if I will do a head or combo, but that all depends on the sale of the Z
