smoking around your amp

whats so bad about it? ive read for lots of amps on ebay where the seller says "non-smoker" or something similar.. what does it do to your amp?

I bought a Fender Champ that reeked of stale cigarette smoke. I had to disassemble it and scrub it with orange oil 409 and windex cleaner to get rid of the smell. I used FreBreeze of the grill cloth.

This was after waiting a couple of weeks for the smell to go away on it own.

I'm allergic to smoke so it was not a plesant experience.

Except for the nicotine film (not specific to amps), nothing.... but some people don´t like (or as just stated are allergic to) the resulting smell of smoke and would therefore rather pass on an otherwise beautiful amp

Nah, makes them look more vintage, and depending what you smoke, it can even make them sound better!

I have bought stuff before that reeked to high heaven and eventually went away after it stayed around me and my place for a time.

That smell is character. It helps to spill beer on them, too.

I purposely put that 'stale spilt beer' smell back on. Need something to remind this old fart of the good ole days when playing.

Cancer from second hand smoke has recently passed kidney failure as a killer of guitar amplifiers.

I personally wouldnt let anyone smoke around my amps just because I hate receiving items that reek like smoke...

The last two items I've gotten in trades smelt of this; a pickup and a microphone. The pickup I don't mind so much... but the mic... come on.

cigar smoke is much more pleasant in gear than cigarrette smoke.....not to mention classier.....

As an electronic technician by trade, I can honestly say that I would rather have an amp that has not been around cigarrete smoke. I commonly open up customer' merchandise, and besides roaches, there is no other thing I hate dealing with more.

For whatever reason, tars and nicotines are attracted to plastics with greater attraction inside the chassis than they are to metal. This "plastic" includes pc boards. They permanently stain nylon. The major concern in my job is the insidious degree that cigarette smoke has to reach every nook and cranny inside, and the mechanical drag it creates between small moving parts.

Although amplifiers have few moving parts (control pots, tube sockets), I would say that mentioning whether an amp has been around cigarette smoke is a valid one.

My latest used amp didn't smell smoke, but coffee and sweat musicians..
