Snagged a Strymon Lex rotary pedal

Gearjoneser

Gear Ho
For years, I played in a blues rock band The Kinship, which featured Mike Mangan on Hammond who went on to be a virtuoso solo artist B3 player.

Since then, I've always wanted to cop the perfect Hammond/Leslie sound, and up till now have relied on my Fulltone Choralflange to supply a pseudo Leslie effect.

Last night, I went into a local GC and was amazed to find a used Strymon Lex for only $199. Yeah, a bit of money but they sell for $300 plus, and are on a waiting list. I demoed it and realized it's the best one I've ever heard. It's like the H&K Rotosphere with more tweakability, and way cheaper.

So, I went back today and gave them $200 out the door for this magnificent rotary speaker/vibey/Leslie pedal by one of the leading pedal makers Strymon.

It's on a Police hold for another 5 days, so I was bummed to leave the store without it, but I'll have it on Wednesday. 2012 has been a year of pedal jonesin, and I've gotten a good number of exciting new pedals this year. I'm satisfied with my guitars, amps, and pickups, so I guess it's time to explore pedals. But this rotary thing is something that's always eluded me, and this is the new industry standard rotary pedal. I can't wait to have this sucker on the board.

I'm not going to watch those clips. I'm already considering taking out a loan to start buying stuff I've "found".

Re: Snagged a Strymon Lex rotary pedal

Very cool!

I used the Rotosphere for the first time at a gig tonight and loved it!

I had to lay off because we have a Hammond player and I didn't want to step on his toes but damn what a cool sound!

Re: Snagged a Strymon Lex rotary pedal

I can't wait to have this thing. It's not like a mild want.....it was like something I REALLY wanted for years.

I've been selling off some gear to fund new pedal purchases this year, and I'm loving it.

So far in 2012...
Joe Bonamassa wah and fuzzface
Marshall Gov'nor I stole on clearance for $30 with an additional $10 off coupon. Surprisingly good!
Eric Johnson Fuzz Face
GoGo pedal tuner. No features but true bypass and a huge LED screen.
Fulltone Octafuzz
Now, the Strymon Lex

Re: Snagged a Strymon Lex rotary pedal

Killer freaking pedal! I got my first dose of Strymon today. Got to play an El Capistan and a timeline. Holy crap.

I'm getting the El Capistan.

Re: Snagged a Strymon Lex rotary pedal

Can't seem to rid of my El Crapistan......:D
Well I don't hate it, but I do not like it much either!
Congrats Gear Jo ;)

Lol... you're a echo snob mate.:) I like most of the new Strymon pedals and want a BlueSky and Brigadier to go with the El Cap. Hadn't really looked at the Lex and whilst it is pretty cool I doubt I would use it much in my band, all the same congrats Joe on yet another great deal on a cool pedal. :friday:

Re: Snagged a Strymon Lex rotary pedal

So... What would be the poor's man way to get a leslie cab sound?

I could really use one, we don't have a keyboard guy on our band.

A Leslie simulator IS the cheep way!!!

A Leslie 147 is a $1500 cab these days, a Leslie model 16 or 18 is still close to a grand and the Motion Sound stuff is around $900 so just under $600 for a Rotosphere is a good deal not to mention it's FAR smaller and easier to move!

Re: Snagged a Strymon Lex rotary pedal

I just have my foot ball playing brother pickup my amp and spin around really fast at gigs to get a really good leslie sound. It works until he either gets tangled in the cord or falls down from being drunk and dizzy. To bad Tesla didn't get that wireless energy thing down! ;)

"El Crapistan" :laugh2:

While I'm sure a million people will disagree with me on this, I use a trem pedal with a slower rate for these kinds of tones. Never really cared for the chorus sound myself.

Re: Snagged a Strymon Lex rotary pedal

Heh yeah sorry....it what I usually call it now.....gave up selling it now.....this baby seems to be destined for something else then!

Hmm flangers on fast can also give a decent faux leslie like sound....

You mean there's no choices say under $200 of a, at least, usable and not toy-ish Leslie cab simulator?
Or some sort of modulation effect that imitates the dynamics of that...?

That would be awful.

Re: Snagged a Strymon Lex rotary pedal

Under 2 bills is hard for a Leslie sim but if I had to have a Roto sound and had to stay under 2 bills I'd go Line 6...either the Roto Machine:

Or the MM4 which has Leslie models in it:

Re: Snagged a Strymon Lex rotary pedal

I don't know if it's less than $200, but BOSS has the RT-20 ... I think that's the model number ... the Rotary Ensemble dual pedal.
