Reading again this it reminds me of my experience with G&L jumbo MFD pickups, once in my Asat : I've never come along well with them, and that's exactly what they show, a wider dynamic range, a broader freq span , but definitely stiff pickups to play, I'd say even difficult, lot of volume but made of surgical steel, and they have a strong ceramic mag, I can't say they were compressed but the effect of this wider range were surely compressed in the pedal amp chain.
(I solved my problem putting two standard jaguar pickups in place of the MFDs)

So do Foucault currents : whether they come from covers / baseplates or core materials, they are a major cause of inherent "compression".

I think to have already shared the following test, comparing the effect on electrically induced transients of a compressor pedal VS eddy currents due to a cover. The blue line shows the spikier and faster attack of the same pickup without cover nor compressor. FWIW.
