So... funny things about Les Pauls from a Stratman.

Well well...

First of I doubt my ribs can take much more of this. When I sit down... It's NOT comfortable. I miss the gentle contouring and shape hugging of the Strat :(

I also need to wear the LP lower, as I can't rest my hand well enough if I put it Strat height. With the Strat I can put it a little higher and I can rest my hand at bridge height without pain or cramps. With the LP it really needs to be lower, to get the hand in the natural resting position. It's weird otherwise and I bump my wrists against the edges of the body. Not nice. I had to swap straps with the Strat so I could get it low enough.

I also have the strings a tiny bit lower than on the Strat (4mm) and I don't like it as much. I think I'll increase string height again, but then intonation is problematic on the E and A strings. The others are fine.

But

I'm loving the bridge pickup for OD sounds and the neck/mix for clean/slide. I don't like the neck pickup much at all with distorted sounds actually, unless it's a very light OD. So each pickups do few things but they do it really, really nicely. With the Fender I could almost be happy just with the bridge humbucker.

Bareknuckle Riff Raff is THE pickup for it. I'm loving it. It's just perfect for this particular LP.

My spine doesn't hate me yet (unlike the ribs), and my ears are loving it!!!

Another nice side effect: my other guitars feel much lighter. And I'm appreciating even more the slightly more open, 'wild' tones of the Fender. Day and night, both have their uses for fun times.

Dunno what else I guess... it's a nice Les Paul for what it is. So far better than most Gibsons I played but I never played anything above a Standard.

Oh on the Strat I'm mostly on 10 all the time, everywhere. Due to the HSS setup I can use different pickups for various OD levels. With the LP I really use all the controls.

Dunno what else... I may jack the action a bit more. 5mm maybe as I prefer it. She's strung with 10s so I can do some pretty big bends sometimes, but again so do I with the Strat (10s too).

Win.

Are you a very small/physically weak man, or a little girl? That would explain the pain you feel in your ribs and wrists. I'm certain your poor back will shortly fold under the enormous weight of the guitar.

:joke:

What did you end up getting anyway? Tokai?

Edwards LPC :D

It's not the weight that's problematic, but the edges.

Strat = shape hugging curves. It's cuddly.
LP = curvier but harder on the edges. Ouch.

Yeah, the lack of forearm it didn't take too long to get used to, I just slightly changed the position where I rest my arm and that was it.

The ribs, now that's another matter altogether...

Pierre is without a doubt a girly-man! Bawhahahahahaaa!

This is what I've always felt about Les Pauls, and Gibsons in general: love the tone, hate everything else about them.

Re: So... funny things about Les Pauls from a Stratman.

Pierre's comments are not from the Stratman, who owns Les Pauls (Both Gibson and Epiphone).

I hate too but have to agree with Theodie, on this one.

I don't find the LP shape at all uncomfortable.

+1. Very comfortable for me too (love that arched top), and if you focus on your playing, you don't notice the weight is, not that's it's anything extreme. A couple extra pounds shouldn't humble a grown-up man. You Fender boys need to toughen up a bit.

LP's are more prone to this than most guitars. You need a brighter neck PU. What do you have now? I have a Phat CatN in an LP with an A5/A3 magnet pair (HB in the bridge), and I get very clear, usable tones from the neck.

Re: So... funny things about Les Pauls from a Stratman.

I really ought to get another Les Paul. Does Gibson make one with that 60/30 neck or is that just on the semi-hollows?

Same for me.
I've heard some amazing tones come from Les Pauls, particularly some of Gary Moore's Les Paul tone is amazing to my ears, but I can't enjoy playing one myself personally, it doesn't feel right to me.

Re: So... funny things about Les Pauls from a Stratman.

Are you excessively skinny? I have a les paul (studio), and what really helps is a nice cushion-y layer of fat to keep the sides from digging into your ribs. Speaking of ribs, that's a very nice way to get some extra padding. Mmmm.... There's nothing better than a good rack of ribs.

Re: So... funny things about Les Pauls from a Stratman.

Pierre is French, and a Woman.

Les Pauls are American, and Manly.

It's just not a good match.

If you wear a Paul where you're supposed to, all it contacts is your upper thigh, edges don't dig into anything. :p

Re: So... funny things about Les Pauls from a Stratman.

Edwards LPC = Custom?
That means bindings on the backside of the body right? Those are a bit sharper on the edges than the standards.

Ok, here's what we do: You send me that guitar and I'll send you my Epiphone standard. And I'll also toss in pillow for some extra cuddly'ness. :naughty:

Well, maybe Pierre has an exceptionally big... uhh... croissant that might be squashed when he hangs the guitar too low. :scratchch

No one likes a squashed croissant.

Re: So... funny things about Les Pauls from a Stratman.

:laugh2: :laugh2: Thanks for the vote of confidence. I shall leave out any breakfast thoughts from this thread though :D

Anyway no indeed the weight is no issue at all. It's mostly wrist position when standing up due to the thicker body and edges, and the weirdness of playing sitting down. In a Strat it all falls down very nicely. Takes a bit more position tweaking with the LP.

There's a 59n in the position right now. And indeed I'm thinking something brighter might be the ticket, but the cleans are just so nice.

And yep it's a Custom and has the binding on the back too.

Re: So... funny things about Les Pauls from a Stratman.

The 59n in a LP is very often very boomy. Put something more assertive in the there.

Funny about the hand position. The major problem I have with Strats is that my right hand position is screwed up due to the elbow comfort cut.
