So how to get the tone on this lead? (funk content inside)

now, the full thread =p.

listen to the lead, especially in the middle of the song and not just the beggining. it sounds kinda hollow, i love it.
any ideas on guitars, amps, and especially, eq?

Hard to tell for sure- sounds like a Les Paul and a Tubescreamer and a wah about 1/3 the way down and some phaser in the cleaner parts (or a POD copping those tones)


FWIW, I used to turn on my old Boss Phaser, and turn all the dials off and it got a great hollow sound like that too.

Thats a very cool 70s' type tone though.

ive tried that (lp + overdrive + wah) and it doesnt seem to get it

maybe its heavy eq'd. but the question is, what settings?

HAs a Strong Pete Cornish Sound. With a Wah, I think it is too thin to be a les sounds more single coil to me, but thats just my thoughts

Distortion/OD->Wah->Compressor would get you pretty close to it. Distortion into wah sounds like that, then use the compressor to kinda soften the distortion a bit and smooth out the wah.

I'd have to stick an EQ pedal on the end and play around to get any closer than that, but you would probably need the EQ pedal if you don't have the same guitar/amp combo and want to really nail the sound.

I'm with JeffB mostly but I think that the biggest effect that you hear in it probably comes from the microphone used to record it. It's exactly what makes copping recorded tones hard... You'll have to record yourself with different microphones using different techniques and then listen to the end product if it's close to what you want or not.

Im not hearing a wah at all. What I think Im hearing is that It sounds as if there is an EQ in front of the amp bumping up the mids. Id recommend that you try a graphic EQ put before the amp with the mids boosted up.
