And I too have heard that people use 85s in the bridge to get more mids and bass.
I don't know if they will, I've never tried an EMG.

so many people think that the 81 is so bright and shrill but to me, it's not that at all!

Those who doubted me are indeed correct: the SLSMG DOES have a 3Switch, as opposed to the 5 Switch. I bought the guitar online and after seeing a bladed switch I jumped to the conclusion that it was a 5. So yes, it IS a Three switch.


And I want to go for a Master of Puppets/Black Album Metallica tone. I don't know if that helps or not to base my decision on where to place the pickup. Any suggestions?

Both James and Kirk use an 81 in the bridge. Kirk uses a neck 81, and James uses a neck 60.

I've used and loved (off & on) a couple 81s for a long time. I recently got an 85, and tried it in the bridge with an 81 in the neck. I love the characteristics of each, but thought that the inherint bassiness of the neck with the trebley 81, and the inherint treblyness of the bridge with the bassy 85 made for not enough contrast between them.

Try them both ways, and see what you like.

I think I'm going to go with the 85 in the neck and the 81 in the bridge, since it probably fits my style the best. I would try it the other way around just to see how it sounds, but I'm taking the guitar in for a setup and allowing them to place in the pickups; I really don't know how to do it myself, and I don't want to do something stupid.....

The emgs are supposed to be really easy to install though so you could probably switch them if you want to later on.

hi well i dunno what tech did to my guitar but for some reason they wired it in such a way that my emgs 81/85 work on all 5 selections of my selector... maybe some selections are repeated or something hahah i dunno can anyone gimme any info on why that would be? oh btw 81 bridge 85 neck rocks man...
