So I broke my neck and I have GAS!

Hi everyone,

Have not posted in a while and thought I would pop in and say hello to all you good folks!

So as the title says, I broke my neck ( today is week 5 ). I am sure I made mention in a couple posts that I have some medical issues, well one of them results in seizures. I know when you say seizures many will immediately picture the grand mal type. Mine however are not in that category, they are "more" closely related to a type called myoclonic seizure disorder, but mine can cause what is similar to a paralysis state for a couple seconds to a couple minutes ( it is very hard to explain, without seeing them first hand )

Anyhow,
I usually know when one is starting and can prepare for it, but this one came on suddenly and caught me off guard while I was out on the back porch at around 5am smoking a cigarette before coming in to play some guitar for a bit. Long story short I was unable to catch myself and did a free fall head first into a 2x4" brace for the porch railing. The chair was pretty high ( you basic backyard/porch table chair set ) Where I hit there was also a large bolt which caused a beautiful rip on top of my skull. The impact was so great I had a pretty severe concussion and started going into shock ( we didn't know my neck was broke at this point ) I don't wish that feeling on my worst enemy, it is a feeling of complete and utter helplessness and I just knew something was not right ( aside from the fountain of red blood cells finding freedom, I had always heard head wounds bleed a lot, but wow I had no idea )

With me shaking now uncontrollably, my wife ( and here mom and dad who live down the street and were there helping ) decided it was best to call for an ambulance. So I get there expecting a tetanus shot and some staples or stitches and go home in a few hours.

They sent me up to do a CT as well as a MRI of my skull & neck, about an hour later ( possible more or less, my thinking process at this point was not all it is cracked up to be ) the emergency room Dr. came in and said well we have some bad news and some BAD news in a giggle like manner and asked which I wanted first. I said we will go with the bad, which led to him telling me I would in fact not be discharged. Then cam the "BAD" news, that's when he told me I had broken my neck from the impact ( he even made a comment to the fact that I had to have hit really hard to break it with the impact being from almost the top of my skull )

It ended up being my c5 and it has been both a life changing and priority switching ordeal the last 5 weeks. I will have to remain in a brace for another 5-7 weeks and there is now an issue with my shoulder ( apparently it took a nice hit as well ) One of the tendons I won't even try to spell has been damaged, hopefully it wont require a surgery but it's another 8-10 week injury as well.

PLEASE understand this is in no way a feel bad for me thread and I hope it is not taken that way. I am not looking for sympathy, just trying to explain a freak accident that has caused me to be unable to play since it happened. This has led me to hours of looking at different guitars online and finding myself with the worst GAS I have had since I got back into playing.

Not sure what I am going to get yet to either replace my 60's CW Strat or add too, but even my wife has said I deserve it for going through all this ( I am not stupid enough to argue with my wife, who is excited for me to get a new guitar! )

So anyhow,
Very sorry for the wall of text and I hope I didn't get too graphic. I just wanted to check in and say hello to you guys. Plus I have been really enjoying all the new acquisitions you guys have gotten recently.

I am going to try to play a little this week, strapless so I avoid any undue strain to my shoulder or neck. Hopefully I can play a bit, I miss is SO SO much.

Talk to you folks soon!
Take care,
LazyLightning (~)}:}

I opened this assuming you broke the neck of your guitar. Holy moly man. Speedy recovery.

So did I, and I was going to make a lame joke about how you should seek medical attention. Man, get well soon so you can enjoy the new whatever ... and yeah, hang onto your wife!!

So sorry to hear about that dude! Glad you are working on a recovery!

I don't know if something like this would even help at all but have you seen something like this:

Wow man, that sounds like hell. You are one tough SOB, I'll tell you that much. You seem to be in good spirits even though life has not handed you lemons to make lemonade. I send you mojo to continue your recovery so you can get back to playing.

That looks interesting I wonder if it can be played in a sitting position?

I tried to play a bit today after about 30min my right arm ( the one with the tendon damage ) started to wonky. With that being my picking hand the way your arm pivots at the shoulder to reach the strings is putting stress on the problem area. I will keep at it and know my limits and hopefully be back to playing uninterrupted for as long as I like.

The ambulance crew as well as the emergency room team couldn't believe I never lost conciseness from the initial impact.

All the well wishes are VERY appreciated you guys, I mean that! I also have to agree after 15yrs of marriage I think with all we have been through we have just become much stronger.

I will let you guys know what I decide to get, I have several potentials I am throwing back and forth atm.

LOL,
I didn't even think when I made the thread title, the pun was completely unintentional, but now it seems fitting. Thanks again everyone!

-SnakeAces,
I look at it this way, I can either have the health issues to complain about day in and day out and feel sorry for myself, or I can have a sense of humor about it. Don't get me wrong I have days where it gets to me, but I get past them and remember that no matter how bad it is, it could always be much much worse and that makes me very grateful for the things I have ( and I am not talking material things, though they do help, lol! )

I too send good wishes and prayer your way Bro! Wow, what a whoredeal.. And yeah, cool wife too! Keep us posted on the recovery and the shopping journey! Yeah, that accoustic stand can be lowered, like a mike stand.. Ive seen em used sitting, though most just use the lap when sitting, but you may need it more to the front for awhile.

Oh, and one more helpful hint.. give up smoking!! Sounds like you are taking dying for a smoke alittle too seriously....

I don't know, I've only seen guys use it from a standing position--helps when you are playing two guitars on stage, one on your strap and one in this stand. But I was just wondering if something like that would help since there would be no weight of the guitar on your body.

You are a tough fellow and kudos to your wife. Praying for a quick and speedy recovery!

Speedy recovery to ya and relief of that G.A.S. quick too. :cool2:

Re: So I broke my neck and I have GAS!

That's quite an ordeal you're going thru and I send you the best of wishes.

I know what it's like, I have seizures too. I still have a bad knee from a seizure that happened 12 years ago. I have to to tell you something that has helped me a lot; stop smoking! I quit since Ocober 2014 and have not had a seizure since, I found that nicotine is worse than alcohol, for me atleast, since it's an upper. I quit nicotine and caffeine and from having 2 or 3 seizures a month I now have had none. Zero, zilch since October.

Re: So I broke my neck and I have GAS!

Again,
Thank you everyone!

Got to play about 30min again tonight which was nice, the acoustic is out of the question atm, it's width would cause to much strain. I can't complain though 30min is better then nothing and hopefully will just keep getting better from here!

Re: So I broke my neck and I have GAS!

Man, I wish you fast recovery. I remember when I broke my left wrist (scaphoid bone) 4 yrs ago, I was in cast for about 5 months. I struggled to play the guitar even 1 yr after I removed the cast.

Re: So I broke my neck and I have GAS!

Man, that's rough - wishing you a swift and full recovery!

I shattered my left elbow in 2010 and thought my playing days were done, but with PT and some hard work I made it back. Like you said, take it slow and know your limits - I'm sure you'll get back as well!

Re: So I broke my neck and I have GAS!

Continued thanks to all of you!

I have got to where I can play for about 45min but not every day, just too much strain since the break is in such a odd location on the C5. Plus I don't want to irritate the tendon in my shoulder and cause even more issues. I promised my wife I would wait till at the earliest week 12 before making a guitar purchase. Not because she thinks I wont be able to play anymore, but because she knows I will be too eager to push myself to play it for long periods everyday, I find it a fair request, since she is right:laughing:
