I'm debating buying an $800 Gibson SG...like a jr or something plain. With no ugly pickguard.

1. Taking a Dremel grinding bit to the finish. (Giving it little dimples all over... Like the BFG)

2. Using some sort of black filler or stain to refinish it.

3. Drilling and setting furniture nails around the outside rim of the guitar. (Studs like a Judas priest guitar)

4. Spraying/Sealing it in nitro with a spray can.

To ultimately give it a BFG look . Raw and Metal.

What say you?

Given what you want to do, I think it would be cheaper and maybe easier to just buy an inexpensive guitar neck and make your own body.

I wouldn't do that to a Gibson - too expensive as a starter. I'd just get a chibson, do whatever you want, and change the electronics/hardware to get it sounding good.

Or just have Kramersteen make you a guitar.

Do not listen to these fools who would have you second-guess yourself. They are only nurturing weakness. Do not settle for a lowly kit guitar, a basted-on neck, or some disgusting Chibson. Take a good guitar and make it great by the power of your will and your hands. Wield that Rob Halford underwear looking axe with pride and honor.

I would agree
you should practice on a lesser model

But then. You will have an awesome looking cheap guitar

And not have any motivation to destroy the resale value of genuine collectable

Wow, I am surprised they are that expensive. They shouldn't go for that much.

They only make a batch of them every 10 years.
It's the best LP I've ever played, I'm surprised more people don't know about them.

Some of them go for over $5k depending on the model, there's a Gary Moore model and some custom painted models too.

I like them because they are different and not all glossy.

Weren't there a handful of cheaper SG models with a satin finish and no grain filler? They weren't as 'lumpy' as the BFGs but they still looked like a project in shop class.

I say it could look awesome.

I do think the chances of it looking messed up are greater if you haven't done it before or if you don't have like a clear plan of action that you thought through.

But I say what the hell. Do it. Otherwise, you'll never know.

I wouldn't spend $800 on that experiment. You could satisfy your leatherboy fetish for $150.
