So I've got a Tele Deluxe (pickup question inside)

I love the stock look

But I HATE the pickups. I thought they were okay at first but at this point I can't stand them. They're muddy AND thin, which is just impossibly gross.

I'm wondering how feasible it'd be to pull apart another pickup and slap it onto the Fender Widerange base plate. The donor pickup would need to be F spaced right? The biggest issue I can think of is that both coils of the donor pickup would have to be adjustable, and I've only ever seen DiMarzios like that. I've heard that some DiMarzios are glued together and that poses a real issue.

What are y'alls thoughts on the matter?

Are you discussing a vintage piece or a re-issue? (The pickups are not the same - by a long way.)

Oh yeah, this is a reissue. I've pulled the pickup apart and its literally just a typical bar mag pickup. Slapping another pickup on to the base plate shouldn't be hard, but I've never tried anything like it so I wanted to get some feedback first.

Well, you're already halfway there... give it a shot. ;)

Contact the Custom Shop and send them your pickup. They will make it sound like anything that you want.

That is what I would do.

I'd get a pickguard with regular humbucker slots. There is no way to know what will sound good in there without trying a couple things.

Plus I wouldn't pull the original pickups apart, you might need them when you sell the guitar. Or just sell the pickups.

The SD custom.shop? I didn't know there was one lol

I'm kinda broke and I'm inpatient so I'm trying to keep this cheap and quick. I have a normal humbucker guard on the way just in case but I want to maintain the stock look

Contact Telenator. No affiliation here. Just heard guys like you that have their similar problem with Wide Range hb solved by Telenator.

Of course, you could always invest in a pair of original Wide Range humbuckers.
