So many pickups (and magnets), so little time, so few guitars....

Re: So many pickups (and magnets), so little time, so few guitars....

My first post here.....I own quite a few guitars...I record these days, no more gigs...
I'm very happy with Gibby 57 Classics, yet, it's time to learn ALL about pickups, from all angles....And about S.D.pickups as well.....I want to upgrade many stock pickups as well....

Welcome aboard!

Tell us about the guitars you want to change the tones in, what PU's are in them now, what direction you want to go tonewise, and what kind of music you play. Take it a guitar at a time.

Re: So many pickups (and magnets), so little time, so few guitars....

My process start being able to flawlessly play the darned song.

THEN I start to think what I'd do differently to make it sound better.

I've done whole albums for different artists playing different styles of music in different countries with guitars costing less than $ 300, modelers costing less than $ 50 and amps costing less than $ 400.

Good tone is good tone, it doesn't matter how much you've spent or where is coming from.

Last year I've played the solo in a rock song for a local band. I've used a MIK Vantage LPC copy with my usual A4 '59n//A8 Custom set through a Johnson J-Station direct to the mixer. When asked about it, and tell, almost everytime I get people smiling and going "No, seriously...".

Food for thought, people... ;)

Yes, and that is awesome.

But doing it on a budget is part of what makes the tinkering thing so appealing and tempting!!!!

A so-so guitar that is set up properly and has a great new pickups, even modded pickups, can be the ticket to a great sound.

I've gotten huge complements playing a strat with Bill Lawrences (Wildes) through a GT-8 or through GT-3 into a solid state amp; or even through an SD-1 into a Classic 20.

The fact that there is so much cool stuff that is affordable makes it all the more tempting to add to the guitar and pickup collection!

Hey Dominus, where are you in Michigan, anyway?

Re: So many pickups (and magnets), so little time, so few guitars....

It's a lot more fun and a lot easier to mess around with magnet changes or whatever, than to sit down and try and write a killer song... ;)

Re: So many pickups (and magnets), so little time, so few guitars....

I've definitely gotten to the point where my interest in gear has supplanted my interest in playing. QUOTE]

As to the original question, yea guilty as charged, especially after discovering this forum! But, the experimentation has been worth it and the LTD is done, as far as I'm concerned; stock Jazz and Custom 8 make it "just right". :bigthumb: Now time to concentrate on playing! (Hm, still need to sort out that Jackson though... )
