So my Carvin's on the fritz again...

...and it's NOT the tubes this time.

I know this because before I retubed the amp, I "tested" all the tubes I was going to use in another amplifier and they all worked fine.

Basically what's happening is about 15-20 minutes after I've got the amp running, the distortion channel starts crackling, sputtering, and cutting out and the problem gets worse until the distortion channel fails completely. The clean channel, however, is totally fine! Switching, reverb, effects loop, all cable connections etc are fine... the problem is in the amp itself.

Some of you may remember my other problem I had with the amp: The official diagnosis from carvin was that an output tube failed and took some other components with it in a very smoky, smelly manner. Read about it here: https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=102350 I have to wonder if my current problems are left over from that situation or due to the kind of repair they did. The attenuator I use was called into question on that thread, but to be honest I got what i felt were good arguments from both sides as to whether the attenuator exacerbated the problem or not. Carvin's engineers told me the attenuator was not to blame.

I'm driving the amp down to the Carvin factory in San Diego over the weekend to turn it in for repair. I am starting to think about new amps, too.

Anyone got any theory as to what's going wrong?

The crackling, and Cutting out sounds to me like a bad pre-amp tube......The sputtering on the other hand I think means your idle is set to low.

If it happens awhile after the amps been on, It may be that one tube thats dedicated solely to the dirty channel (given that the problem only occures on the dirty channel), Is heating up something on the board, temporarily melting a solder joint, and causeing it to cut out. Then once the amp is off for awhile, the joint kools and everythings fine Until ya have the amp on for awhile and it heats up again.

I've tested and swapped and observed the tubes too much to really believe that the tubes are the problem at this point. However, a heat damage/component failure (possibly left over from the other incident) seems like a good theory.

Hey bro, it's not that uncommon for 12ax7's to work fine in one amp, but barely/never work in another. The reason is differing plate voltages can cause certain (mostly Mesa, EH and some JJ's) tubes to literally "shutdown" after a while. I have a Carvin MTS 3200 in the shop right now that will not run a brand new set of Mesa tubes that work fine in a Mesa, but not in this amp. A set of Ruby 12AX7AC5 work absolutley flawlessly. Which preamp (12AX7's) did you put in there.

Groove Tubes Gold Series GT12AX7R's, same kind I've been using since I got the amp. This is a brand new set too.

Well, in that case, I don't know what to tell ya... :( It's highly unlikely that power tube failure and the associated frying of components (which is real common) would have any affect on the preamp section, unless it damaged the heater windings in the power Tranny.... and that's a pretty far stretch. I'll take a glance at the Legacy schematic tomorrow when I get to the shop.

...good luck with it...

Carvin's window

Carvin's window

Meet me at the Carvin store at 3AM, and I'll swing it around by it's power cord, and let it fly through Carvin's window! You video tape it, and we'll put it on youtube with our faces blacked out! :biglaugh::laugh2::fing2:

I like this idea. Reminds me of the national tire and battery commercial where the old lady throws a tire through their window. :laugh2:

Thanks Jeff! You're my big red white and blue amp tech hero. :D

IIRC the Carvin store has bars on the windows, probably for that exact reason.

I had the opportunity to try a roadster the other day but did not... maybe I should go back and look into it again. Mesa is so hit and miss with me... one amp I'll be very indifferent about and the next one will be absolutely killer for me. I'd love a 5:25 Express head.

that bites man...i'd probably be looking to trade it in on something else if it were me...i hope it works out either way!

I'd probably get $400 max from selling it, resale value on these things are just crap.

I test drove a few other amps at GC the other day that I thought might fit my needs... the only other amp I could really see myself using was the Peavey JSX but ideally I'd like something a tad more organic sounding. I'm also moving down to a 2x12 cab soon so that might facilitate higher-wattage amps without needing an attenuator.

What I'd really like is a CAA/Suhr OD50. Those things are just my style for controls and channels and sound and the tone is nothing less than amazing. They're way expensive though... I'd probably have to buy one on credit if I can even finagle that. I'll probably have to settle for something in the $1000-1300 price range.

Re: So my Carvin's on the fritz again...

Alright, dropped the amp off at Carvin San Diego on Saturday... guys said that I'll probably hear back from them in two weeks or so.

That's cause it's in the middle of Santa Bananna.

Re: So my Carvin's on the fritz again...

Man, you've had some bad luck with that thing haven't you? Is it being repaired under warranty?

Re: So my Carvin's on the fritz again...

I'd say get into another amp with better build quality.

Considering your budget, a secondhand well made production line amp like a Mesa or Rivera would be the best bet. Splawn are also well put together, but I'm unsure what they sell for s/h.
