I should really have him start a relic-ing service...

he's my band's lead guitarist. pictured is his workhorse beater epiphone that he dedicates only for practice, and he practices alot too.
the guy brought it to a tech to replace a faulty switch but turns out the bridge pickup died from being rusted to the core.

Re: so, my friend has really sweaty palms...

I have a friend who can wear the gold plating off of hardware pretty quick... but damn that's nasty!

Re: so, my friend has really sweaty palms...

One, he may have a dermatological condition that could be treated. I know that there is a product on the market. He should also make sure that he washes his hands before each playing session.

Two, covered pickups are a must. Using a dab of dielectric grease can protect switches.

And three, probably the most effective thing is simply wiping down the guitar with a damp rag and then buffing it with a soft dry cloth. A light polish with a Carnauba wax product will help protect the finish.

A friend of mine was an auto mechanic, working all day in oil, gas and solvents. I finally had to ban him from playing my guitars...he could completely kill a new set of strings in 3.2 seconds.

In this case though, the sweaty palm issue is only part of the problem. This guitar is not being maintained properly.

The previous owner of my Goldtop was similarly afflicted BUT not severely enough to turn anything green.

Re: so, my friend has really sweaty palms...

our tech was finally able to remove the bridge pickup, the screws were so rusty he had no choice but to destroy the pickup ring...

not only was the guy's sweat really abundant and corrosive, to make it worse his place was humid as hell too. we have band practice there every week and a few months ago there was this huge boiling noise on my JVM. we took it to a repair guy and he said a capacitor died and the inside of the amp was all rusted and really nasty, which is surprising because it was bought brand new in 2013... now that I think of it his epiphone was bought in late 2013 too and he has already replaced 1 set of TOM bridge on it because to the saddles on the wound strings side corroded to the extent they stop working...

Re: so, my friend has really sweaty palms...

All titanium floyd rose and direct mounted encased pickups won't do that.

Re: so, my friend has really sweaty palms...

I bet that what happened was that the magnet just disintegrated. The high humidity can't help the situation, but really, wiping it down along with maybe an occasional squirt of 3-in-1 oil or WD-40 on the bridge and pole pieces would go a long way towards keeping it from rotting.

Re: so, my friend has really sweaty palms...

Well,
Looks like he only changes strings when they break. The high E looks new but the others I would have to use at least 1 whole scotchbrite green pad and a haz mat spray.
I can't believe he got the bridge too, that is impressive. For his own crack at fame I suggest you ask him if he would LIKE to be voted (by all, I assume) as the World's #1 Guitar Killer, Guiness record too!
And I mean that with absolute respect, no sarcasm here.
SJ ps-I wonder how many door handles he replaces?
