So Supro is back?

I just saw the ad in this month's Guitar World. How true are they to the original circuit? They said they stayed true to the original "preamp" circuit but what about the rest of the electronics and the speaker?

Re: So Supro is back?

hmm several years ago I played a PRS McCarty thru a Prosonic
while the PRS was nice
the Prosonic remains vividly the best sound I have ever heard from a guitar amp

Re: So Supro is back?

Yeah but you know how it is , we hear something we don't like and you never forget that. If you see a Prosonic for $500 on CL you buy that sucker !

Re: So Supro is back?

Paging Kevlar3000, you have a call on the courtesy phone...

Seriously, dude would know Supros inside out, up, down, backwards and sideways.

Re: So Supro is back?

Thanks Ginormous ! Just listened to the clip, it has that same cluck sound that my Supro Taurus does. It sounds a bit more compressed and modern, but that is not a bad thing... In terms of old school build, there is no bowl of pasta quite like a vintage Supro. Think Hiwatt, then imagine everything the exact opposite. Wires all over, ceramic caps everywhere, nothing clean about it, but it does not matter to me, as no amp does that cluck thing like a Supro. They are a pain to work on.... Cosmetically, my Supro Taurus might be the prettiest amp I own. Very mod in it's mid 60s design. I had a Valco built Wards head that was much more basic cosmetically, but had the identical build internally.

My hunch is that the new Supro, much like the Fender RI amps are a modern take on a vintage classic. Are these PCB builds? Assuming yes. They look the part, but I would always roll with the quirks of a vintage amp, as no two of em ever sound exactly the same. My hunch is that these all are much more dialed in to a specific sound.

Re: So Supro is back?

I'll pass I have never come across a decent sounding Zinky

Never heard a bad Zinky amp myself.
My #1 is a little Blue Velvet 25 watt combo. I have also at the same time owned a number of Fenders Boogies and Marshals yet the little Zinky constantly remains my favorite go to play out amp.
Bruce also designed the IMO best clean amp on the planet in the Fender Vibro King.

Re: So Supro is back?

I tried them out the first day I saw my local Sam Ash get some in. They're tempting just on an aesthetic and mojo level, but the Dual Tone I played was really big sounding, and a musical sounding amp. I know it's a PC board amp loaded with good components, and built to replicate the old ones, much like reissue Fenders. But it does sound damm good.

I'd love to add one to my collection, but the $1100 is a little steep for me. Maybe I'll land a deal on one in the future.

Re: So Supro is back?

As I think further, it's kinda like the Ampeg reissues back in the 90s. Full retro looks, but a standard modern build. I assume that the price will come down, or there will be a craigslist gem, at a steal, listed.

Great with marinara and meatballs.

Re: So Supro is back?

I think of them the way I think of the Fender 68 Deluxe Reverb.
Yeah, I know what I'm buying, and so what....It sounds great, even though it's not an original.

Not likely as Bruce after he bought the rights was playing around with some of the inventive early Supro power amp designs with his preamp mojo and was dedicated to resurrecting the brand as a really high end amp. After he sold the brand he stopped building his Zinky amps and became Supro's chief designer so for the foreseeable future these will be high end tone monsters at boutique prices ( per the last conversation I had with Bruce).

Difference in the Fender and the Supro is the Supro may actually be as well built as the original ( and yes that is even as a non hand wired PC based amp. The real Zinky stuff like my Velvet is all PC based but is bullet proof reliable on the road!!). The Fender sounds great but poke around inside---.

Re: So Supro is back?

Here's the only photo I found of a reissue Supro gut shot. Looks simple, durable, and manufactured about the same as a Fender or Peavey. If it weren't done like this, the amp would be $2500.
