Kemper didn't do anything that wasn't already being done. They just put the impulse response technology into a box that you can use live. The best way I can explain that is the give an example: Altiverb is a plug in that you can use on your DAW (Protools and such). Altiverb also supports impulse responses. You can sample any space and load it in as an impulse repsonse, and boom you now have the sonic characteristics of Carnegie Hall. Well the Kemper allows you to do that with amps. But it wasn't something that they patented. They just put it into a box and now pretty much any company that builds modeling systems allows IR's at some level (Line 6 with the Helix, Fractal with the AxeFx II, Kemper).

True. The meat of the patent is in capturing the amp voicing and speaker sound in two IRs. Anyone can use the technique but the KPA makes it easy to capture and provides a platform for distribution.

It'll be interesting to see how many people can/will apply the techniques to other devices. AFAIK, AxeFx and Helix are the only devices that can process multiple IRs in a single preset.

Yes. Kemper does make it as user friendly as possible. But IR's are the modeling of the future, especially for players who use actual amps at home and want all of them live.

I finally cranked my Positive Grid head at practice today with my drummer. It was loud and clear! Playing some hard rock, I was going thru my orange 112 and made it as loud as my 15 watt tube amp. Now I can have a Hiwatt Lol. I'll try a 212 next time.

I literally just noticed those on the sweetwater site
and thought WTF

glad it has a niche

I wont be needing it
but its nice that someone finds it attractive

I'm not against modeling at all
but I find I can get "my" sound out of most any amp
by using the knobs provided

right now, I have discovered my new digital PA XR-18 has a tube guitar amp model built in
and it sounds just great, reacts to pedals in the same way a tube amp would
I have pushed my genuine Tube amp back into the closet

I can find 'my sound' with any amp with reverb, but I don't like carrying amps to gigs, or traveling with them. So now I bring a modeling amp (Fractal AX8) and plug into IEMs for live use. My sound is consistently great out front and in my ears, which was never the case when I was using my amp- it would sound great onstage, but not out front. I have control over that, now.

On a related note/heads up just wanted to mention that Positive Grid is giving away their Bias Pedal Distortion VST for free. Cutoff to download and register it is midnight 1/2/2017. I played around with it a little bit and it looks pretty interesting. Looks like does some kind of IR matching thing if you want to create you own virtual dirt pedal. No I am not affiliated with Positive Grid in any way.
