So uh the EMG 58...

I know these have been around forever, I've heard some clips online but not enough, how does everyone feel about this one? I've always been curious about it because of the active p90 descriptions of it...

Re: So uh the EMG 58...

It's more like the EMG version of a PAF (rather than P90) if you ask me. F73's description doesn't sound flattering, but it's true. That doesn't mean it sounds bad, it's just more of a rock & roll pickup. I can see people liking it as an alternative to the 85 in the neck for a more vintage-ish sound, but it's still pretty tubby (like the 85 in the neck).

I like it as a bridge pickup for sludge doom.

Re: So uh the EMG 58...

It would be interesting if EMG produced a -58X but this is highly unlikely when they have the -57/-66 pair.

Last year, I obtained a P90 soapbar-sized EMG active pickup whose packaging and ID label both described it as a -91. (Definitely a USA 9v active model and NOT the passive EMG-HZ model of the same name.) This item sounds more P90-ish in the neck position. This is unfortunate because I wanted to install it in my PRS SE One.

Re: So uh the EMG 58...

I think they do make a 58X. The "X" is just a different preamp as far as I can tell, might even be the exact same preamp between all models.

Re: So uh the EMG 58...

Surely, on the -58, the pre-amp IS the issue. It is responsible for more noise than later designs but to change it would adversely affect the tone.
