So what are the final thoughts on Jet City Amps?

Re: So what are the final thoughts on Jet City Amps?

Sound good - to me, I was shocked. I got some great sounds out of the little combo.

Built well? Who knows? For $300, who cares? You get a couple years out of it and then buy a new one.

Re: So what are the final thoughts on Jet City Amps?

I had the PicoValve for a few hours. I could tell that it had a very nice Marshall-ish roar in there, but mine had taken a beating in shipping from MF, so it kept cutting-out and farting. Ended-up sending it back and ordering the Egnater Tweaker. I much prefer the Tweaker because it's got the roar that the Pico had, but so much more. I can get a nice chimey, Fender tone out of the Tweaker, but never found anything like that in the Pico. I will say one thing about the Pico though, that little 2 watt switch worked well to bring down the volume. Whereas the Tweaker is a VERY loud little amp that could easily be gig-worthy for most. I wish I had a Jet City 20H to try out, but I'm pretty happy with the Egnater at this point.

I had a 20 head and loved it. Great gain tone.. Mine seemed made well and I have heard from reviews and sources that Mike Soldano is/was VERY picky about the components and build being good..
I did return mine and got a Tweaker. The Tweaker has good clean and many different usable tones.. The JCA20 has pretty much one killer sound.. If that sound works for you then I highly recommend. If I had the $$, Id get a the big JCA head to get that tone again..

One more thought, the Jet City guys have always been very cool to me when Ive contacted them.. That goes along way for me too..

Re: So what are the final thoughts on Jet City Amps?

Rockin'.

That's the only word you need to know.

I love the JCA20H, and it pretty easily displaced my HT-5. It's very well built as well. It does decent cleans, lacks an effects loop, but has very simple construction. That means it responds well to tube changes, more significantly than other amps with more solid-state components. (Based purely on speculation, I'm lookin' at you, Tweaker.)

It absolutely does the Marshall roar, but with a voicing slightly more towards the lower mids. It doesn't stay clean long, but that's not why you buy a Soldano. I'm a big fan of the amp, especially since I got it for about $250.

Where is this coming from? The tweaker is a lot more responsive to tube changes than many channel switchers, and just about as responsive as any of the other class AB 15W jobs, and, solid state components? Where? None of the clipping is from diodes as far as I can tell, and so I'm wondering that exactly you're talking about.

Re: So what are the final thoughts on Jet City Amps?

Ehh, I saw a gut shot of one of those at some point, and it looked like a lot more tone shaping was going on through caps and resistors than tubes. Really, I'm comparing it to my HT-5, which changed some with tube changes, but not that much. I figured that most of the voicing was done in the Tweaker through changes in the switches, which obviously change out preamp filtering values.

i freaking love the samples i've heard online!! if i had the cash id get that 100 watt head or theres a new one coming out with prescence/depth knobs?? ...yeah. sounds to me like the perfect combo between marshall and mesa to my ears!!

Re: So what are the final thoughts on Jet City Amps?

Where's Convoys To Nothingness? He picked up one of the JCA100H heads, and he was raving about it. I've heard that next year they're set to debut a two-channel 20 watter. It almost makes me wish I'd waited to pick that one up instead. Almost.

Re: So what are the final thoughts on Jet City Amps?

The Jet City amps are a great bang for the buck, swap out tubes for different tones and are easily modified to get about any tone you want. Speaker swap or add a cab and you can rock with the best of them for ALOT less money.

Re: So what are the final thoughts on Jet City Amps?

How does it compare tone wise (not watts) to the Marshall Class 5?
