I notice some pups are listed as neck and some bridge. So whats the difference? what makes one better in one location vs. the other? Number of windings? magnet strength or kind? ron
Re: So what makes a neck or bridge pup so different??
bridge pickups are would a bit hotter. the bridge position is naturally lower in volume compared to the neck due to less string vibration. in the olden days there was no such thing as "bridge" or "neck" pickups so the neck pickup ofen overpowered the bridge pickup

ok. I think i understand. So how about this?? if i have a duncan distortion in the bridge spot. what do you think of a jb in the neck Vs. a 59. since i beleave the distortion Output is higher then the jb. (i think) would they be kinda "even" in that arangement? Or just crap? And the 59 is the way to go in the neck? thanks

Or....
Take a Distortion neck model [which is absolutely positively awesome as it...] and swap the ceramic magnet out for an A5. Then you will have a JB model with neck appropriate output.

I have been wanted to try this because i heard it is a great neck tone? also aceman can it be said that once the A5 is in a DDn it becomes a lower output, more vintage sounding JB if you use it in the bridge spot?

Neck models attempt to compensate for differences in the physics and tone of the neck position. The way they usually do this is by using fewer windings than a bridge model and by attenuating the bass and midrange, while enhancing treble response. Also the pole spacing of neck models may be narrower to position the poles under the strings better.
However historically the majority of pickups produced have not been calibrated for their position and there's really nothing stopping a person from using any pickup in any position.
