So what's the latest rage in distortion pedals that go best with single coils?

Re: So what's the latest rage in distortion pedals that go best with single coils?

I just had the opportunity to A/B my Weehbo JMP Drive and the DLS... the Weehbo makes the DLS sound like a fuzz box.

And to think that I almost bought a DLS instead of a Weehbo... yikes! it's not that the DLS isn't a great pedal, it's just that the Weehbo is that much better.

Single coils give it a total SRV flavor, it's pretty addictive.

The 3 that have been on my board longest are

Rawkworks Light OD Deluxe - Klon + Bluesbreaker combo, mainly use the Klone as an always on "slight break up" tone, Bluesbreaker for slightly heavier stuff

Stamps Drive-O-Matic - For heavier stuff, apparently its Rat like? Not sure never played a Rat before! I use it for all my 80s rock-y stuff. Only use the yellow channel though, red channel is strictly for making my amp feed back haha

Skreddy Lunar Module Deluxe clone - My go to solo tone. So much sustain and Gilmourness!

Order wise its guitar - Lunar Module - Light OD - Drive-O-Matic

My favourite distortion pedal is made on Long Island. It's called the Brotech Fat Pipe Pro. I rarely use distortion, but the Fat Pipe Pro is the best one I've encountered thus far.

I can make some clips if you like.

I don't think its so much the distortion pedal - its the combination of the pedal with the amp you are using.

For example - the Suhr Shiba.... Sounds beyond excellent with a Fender Blackface - but with a middier amp not so good.

I used the same much-modified Boss SD-1 overdrive pedal for almost thirty years. A couple of years ago I felt that times had moved on and it was time to look at something new. So i bought three more SD-1s.

I've yet to use mine with single coils. I recently converted my only single coil guitar to humbuckers. I need to get my Tele back up and running...

Really depends on the amp you're running too. But I like the ocd, adds nice amounts of meat but keeps you're single coils sounding like single coils.

I did a small recording last night after I got everything set-up to do amp+mic recording without using the mics on my Zoom H4 (Sm57).

I was tired and felt like crap all day... I haven't been sleeping good the past few weeks, I am an occasional insomniac and the past few years have been getting worse and worse.

But I cut a track with my Area '61 with the Weehbo JMP Drive anyhow just to get it out of the way.

Re: So what's the latest rage in distortion pedals that go best with single coils?

2 ones that come to mind are the OCD and Blues Shaman. Different worlds here. Fairly simple stuff, kind of like tube screamers. The OCD is a lot thicker sounding and is more of an overdrive pedal while the Blues Shaman is brighter and you can work enough gain out of it for distortion. Both work amazingly for single coils but out of those 2 I recommend the OCD for single coils specifically. I like the Blues Shaman better for the darker sounding humbucker guitars, but with single coils the OCD comes in handy because it won't color the single coil sound (IE make it respond like a humbucker) and it will beef it up so you don't have to rely on treble to be heard. The OCD packs quite a bit of gain too, more than the average tube screamer, it's just that the Blues Shaman can give you more, and has a couple more feature. I just don't like TOO much gain.
