The Death sounds like a D activator in the vids I've seen, but whats the Drop like? Whats the basic EQ?
So whos using a Lace Drop N gain or deathbucker now?

The bridge is a very cutting pickup, as you would expect any pickup trying to compete directly with the EMG 81 to be. For the most part, the Drop n' Gain bridge sounds like an EMG 81. If you hate the 81's sound, you probably won't dig the Drop n' Gain bridge very well. However, the Drop n' Gain has really nice picking response and great harmonics that sound natural. Cleans in the bridge are decent. The bass and low-mids have a bit more balance than the EMG 81, but, ultimately, they seem very close in overall EQ and it absolutely cuts like an 81 under gain.
The Drop n' Gain neck gives a fatter humbucking sound that adds a little "cream" to the top end, but isn't muffled at all. The neck is great for most styles of lead playing, with a very musical, almost acoustic, EQ when clean. Really nice pickups either way.

A passive 81 is what I want. Is it overall bright with the crunchy highs like the 81? I was gonna try the H4, but I keep hearing bad things.

If you want a passive pickup that sounds and acts like an active EMG, the Drop n' Gains are your best bet. The D-Activator is a nice pickup in its own right, but it definitely fell a little short of hitting the 81 mark. The H4, on the other hand, is really just a sales gimmick in my opinion. The only way to get the H4 to sound decent is to put an active preamp on it and what's the point of investing in passives if you're just going to hook a battery up to them anyways? Try the Drop & Gain.

Thats what threw me off about the H4. I didn't realize the boost thing needed a battery. I tried the D acts, and I don't like the singlecoil twang thing it has going.
