Socket savers?

Re: Socket savers?

If I were tube rolling on some type of epic quest for sonic nirvana, I would consider using them. But, only until I found THE tube. Then I would pull the "saver" and plug the tube into the socket, direct.

On a related note, I have used tube adapters/converters before, in home audio gear. But only while I decided whether I wanted to re-wire or replace a socket for a different, compatible tube type or leave as is.

Re: Socket savers?

I think that is exactly what these were developed for, tube testers. Guys in the 30's didn't do a lot of tube swapping in whatever amps were available. They just played them as they got them, and picked up a replacement tube of any type in a drug store or such from one of those tube testers with the tube stock in the bottom. Hell, even in the 60's players weren't that anal about tube types and matching and the such.

They might make sense in something like a tube tester that sees lots of "action" so to speak, but in guitar amps they seem more like a solution in search of a problem.

Re: Socket savers?

I was considering the use of socket savers only for the repetitious, possibly detrimental plugging and unplugging of tube rolling, after which the final selections would have been plugged directly into the amp sockets.

This is all you need:

I use a metal pick for tube socket pin-holder retentioning.

SAFETY WARNING!

***high voltages present - make sure to drain caps before attempting***

If you are nerdy enough to tube roll for tone, wouldn't you always question whether the socket savers compromised the tone of the tubes and wrecked your experiment?

Not necessarily, though I probably should. I don't think I'm going to do it now. Now I have nine of these things taking up space for really no good reason. Another day at chez Sammler.
