Solder Iron Needed For Pickups What Power ?

Re: Solder Iron Needed For Pickups What Power ?

Personally, I find that the higher the wattage of the iron, the better. It's like using a sharp knife as opposed to a dull knife. Of course, I was a Navy electronics technician for a number of years, so maybe I've forgotten the sort of troubles less experienced solderers have.

You want less wattage, not more. Solder melts at a low temp. A hotter iron liquifies the solder too fast & makes it run all over, which can then short things out. Plus you can overheat pots easier & ruin them.

You want more wattage, not less. A weak iron can easily cause you to overheat a pot (it's a heat sink) before the solder can melt.

Byt the way... I just switched to a new soldering iron...

The Weller 8200pks... My old gun was the tb100pk... I am not sure if there was something wrong with my tb100pk, but now I am able to solder a lot more things and quicker with the 8200pks... So, it's pretty simple.. I wasn't getting enough heat from the tb100pk...

I can even desolder and solder pickup covers... something I was never able to do before...
