Soldering To Coil Wire Ends

Hi all,

I've been able to get myself a winder, and have been playing around with redoing one of the Tonerider humbucker coils I broke a while back, but a bit thin on how to attach the breakout wiring to the coil wire - any advise on how to do this?

I've had a bit of a Google, but the examples I found were either for larger gauge wire that can be held in clips (and seen with the naked eye for that matter!), or Strat style eyelets, but not for a humbucker coil. I'll keep looking around, but any pointers in the meantime would be appreciated :)

Re: Soldering To Coil Wire Ends

I think you have to scrape the insulation off first. The larger hookup wire can be placed in a clamp of course, so if you peel back a turn then you'll have slack.

So with the hookup wire held in a clamp instead, I could wrap the coil wire around it a few times, and apply the solder. Sounds easier, though a little worried of breaking the coil wires either way!

Re: Soldering To Coil Wire Ends

I'd have the coil wire in my hand. Hookup wire is tinned and with excess solder. Heat the hookup wire and press the clean coil wire section into the solder

Re: Soldering To Coil Wire Ends

In the end, I just needed to wrap the coil wire ends around the hookup wire, and apply the iron. I guess it's hot enough to do away with the enamel coating, and given how unlikely it was that I could tell if I'd sanded any off, I'm quite glad!
