Re: solid state in jazz
My solid state amplifier has NO tone --- in a good way.
It puts out exactly what is coming out of that output jack.
I think that's the draw for jazz players.*
Most of us are rock or blues players, let's say.
We've done countless polls on the SDUGF where the result, again and again is that for a rock or blues player, the amplifier is superlatively important in the overall sound produced / targeted.
Now, I don't know about you, but I play an off-the shelf Stratocaster, and I can't tell you a thing about how it resonates, what its resonant peak is, etc. The pickups that are in it are just whatever was in there when I bought it.
Jazz guys with true hollowbodies, you see, their guitars are far more demonstrative of their physical tonal properties. Also some of these guys will spend what, $1200 on a perfect pickup for their guitar (and I don't mean their make and model, I mean their guitar)
What they hear out of that guitar and what they get that magic pickup for is to create the ideal tone at the output jack of that guitar
Flash back to me, with the stock Strat. I don't care what's coming out of my output jack, as long as I can hook it to a Bassman or something and turn the knobs until I sound like Free Bird. I care about what is coming out of the speaker, not the output jack.
*The jazz guy wants that sound to be everything it's going to be as it leaves their beautifully luthiered guitar, and not have any degradation of that perfect output.
Solid state clean alters the signal less. Plain and simple.
Then again, what do I know?
