Solid state replacements for tubes.. does this really work?

Solid state replacements for tubes.. does this really work?

The way I look at it is this:

These are just another "flavor" of preamp tube. Just as Tung-Sol, Mullard, EH, etc. all have their own sonic characteristics, these will have theirs, and will work better for certain amps/players/styles.

Good point. They might have zero noise in an amp that traditionally is very high gain and very demanding of V1. If you play with that much gain, it just probably doesn't matter to you the diff in potential tone. But noise might be making you bat Shiite crazy.

I wonder which 12AX7 AMT chose to emulate?. A blackplate RCA?. A Mullard short plate?. Etc. They must have modeled the sound after some tube or other, there are so many different flavors of 12AX7, there's the joy of trying different preamp tubes and finding the one that has "that sound" that you like (mostly in the V1 position). These SS 12AX7's might be good for other positions in an amp that don't effect the sound as much. Maybe they will go on to replicating certain famous preamp tubes if this first attempt has any success. I remember that someone tried making ss preamp tubes in the past, and they were generally a failure on the market, but with the latest technology it may be possible to make an SS preamp tube that actually sounds like a vacuum tube. It will be interesting to see the feedback when people try these new ones out.
