Solid Tube?

Is it possible to turn a solid state into a tube amp. I have a Presonus tube preamp in the fx loop, but would like to add more texture. The amp is a modified Marshall 250DFX. The modifications were done by a friend, but I'm not sure to what extent, other than replacing capicitors, using different guage wiring. He is in Europe for the moment and obviously has no use for emai.:gurmpy: Anyways.... So, in theory, I would just want to add a power stage. How would I go about this, if possible? Would the modifications done hinder this project? Any websites that might help?

Re: Solid Tube?

I'm not sure. I'm about to buy a Cambridge 30, so I'm near broke. Well, I'm bored too. I heard the Cambridge at a local gig. The distortion tone was beautiful. The clean channel was musical. Violin, which is where I want to be. My Marshall is just about there, which is amazing for solid state, but again, it was modified. I wish I would have paid attention when he explained what the modifications were, but I hadn't the slightest clue at the time. The tube preamp adds warmth, but I want to just a bit more. I've tried different tubes, but after awhile, they begin to sound the same. I've tried an Orange AD30, which I would love to get my grubby hands on, but it's too expensive. That is the amp of my dreams. I'm just trying to find a less expensive way to achieve that sound. I know, I know, good luck, right? I have a 59/CC Hybrid, which is as warm as I want the P.U. I've tried various Mesa's, but was never drawn into the hype. I'm might be shunned from this forum, but I think their overrated. I don't use much distortion, which could explain my dislike. Fender is alright, but still, too twangy. Marshall is too edgy. Vox, is smooth, but expensive, as well, they can be unreliable. I'm hoping I can work some magic with the Cambridge, as I see it's full potential, but I am concerned about it's reliability. Great reviews after modification is done. I guess I'll have to wait and see. Hopeful dreaming I guess, or maybe something that has done. You never know until you experiment.

Re: Solid Tube?

Try a secondhand peavey classic 30. It's a nice middle ground between a vox and fender character, and they can be had very cheap.

Re: Solid Tube?

Well wouldn't u need to change the transformer and rewire the whole thing cos tubes work differently to transistors

Indeed, A S.S. power tranny dosen't have 6.3v taps to run the heaters for the tube filaments. You would have to gut the whole thing and start from scratch. By the time your done... You could have bought 2 tube amps.:)

You can put all the lipstick you want on that pig, but in the end it's still a pig.

Get a tube amp.

I've heard of "White Power," "Black Power," "Girl Power..."

Is this where the Ambigiously Gay Duo gets their power from?

Ah Ha, I think I get it? Would that be pre or post Op?:laugh2:

Re: Solid Tube?

Unfortunately, turning a current controlled device like a transistor amp..into a voltage controlled device like a tube amp is like turning an alligator into a horse. It aint happening. Besides, the final output transformer section which is not even needed for transistor amp, would be difficult, and a MAJOR drain on the economics of the tube conversion.
