Thinking very seriously about subscribing to these online lessons of Sonny's.

Love Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt and Derek too, but Sonny Landreth is so innovative.

Love his behind the slide playing.

Check out some of this stuff:

Sonny Landreth is awesome. I saw him at the NO Jazz Fest a few years back. I could have listened to him all day

We used to see him playing around Boulder regularly. Sonny used to live here.

I went ahead and subscribed to the lessons. I need to learn more of that stuff - especially the complimentary things like the behind the slide stuff where you play notes behind the slide and the string length behind the slide rings underneath the slide itself.

I need need pretty high action to do that but it opens up a lot of melodic and rhythmic possibilities. ;)

Here's my slide guitar. It's a 1980-something MIJ Fender Tele Custom. Alder body - not basswood or poplar.

I put a Joe Barden bridge on it with a cutaway on the treble side for palm muting.

Duncan Jerry Donahue pickup and Lindy Fralin Vintage Hot Strat neck pickup.

Heavy strings with a wound G string.

I keep it in open E or open A most of the time.

I love his playing but its not really practical for me. I typically only play one guitar for a show and switch back and forth between slide and fretted all the time. its a great technique but it requires the action to be higher than I like for fretted playing and not using open tunings really limits you as well. ive seen him a bunch of times and its always impressive

All true.

But I like the sound of open tunings and my acoustic guitars are usually in open tunings.

I learned to play slide on my acoustic guitars in open tunings and then applied that to my electric guitars. So it feels natural to me to use open tunings.

And I don't mind having a couple of guitars onstage.

It's kind of fun to show them off. ;)
