Some Pickups Sound Better Loud

Do you think this is true? PRS McCarty pickups come to mind. I don't really like them at low volumes but when the tubes get cookin they sound awesome!

Re: Some Pickups Sound Better Loud

I had that experience with the Fender Texas Specials they didn't sound as good as the Duncan Vintage staggered strat until one night I got to play them loud in public through a vintage Ampeg tube amp. The Duncans sounded good at low volume at home and loud as well.

The C5 is a prime example.

Through a cranked Marshall or Fender the C5 is cool. Played at more modest and less overdriven volumes it lacks balls and midrange, IMO. Perfect example. Lew

+1 on the C5. I just had that revelation at my last gig.

It's not a bedroom pickup at all. The flat/scooped mids really give some clarity to a midrangey blaring marshall-type amp at gig volume.

When the amp gets cranked the treble starts to increase and so does that "chunk" when you palm mute. It gets to the point where the palm mutes are felt in the chest thumping away hahah and usually I have to knock the treble down a few notches. That's my experience at least.

Some pickups do in fact REACT differently at higher SPLs ...you should know that....;)

Then again . . . there's exceptions to every rule. :)

The C5 is one of my favorite bridge pups, and I only play at "bedroom" levels.

How much of that is the amp, tubes, and speakers?

I tested the pickups on many amplifiers. From 5w to 50w at different vol levels. Easy enough to tell because I have 7 more guitars to compare w. I witnessed the criticism of McCarty pickups and I'm convinced that much of it is because those guys aren't cranking tha amps!

Trust me. There are 50w tube amps these days that sound fantastic at loud T.V. levels. Obviously not as good as a cranked amp. Still great sound. Obvious to tell if you compare 8 guitars.

Howdy,

I had a 1982 Rickenbacker 320 "B" (Very similar to what John played on the Beatles' first Ed Sullivan show appearance) which I bought back in my undergrad days at LSU.
It featured the 3 "toaster top" fat single coil pickups which were so common in thier 60s guitars. I discovered that when played through an amp on 9 or even 10, those low-output P/Us absolutely roared!! The best combination was the bridge alone or the neck alone. I've never heard anything like it, except for "Green River" or perhaps CCR's cover of "Suzy Q".
It was fun using this in bars in the mid-80s, when almost everyone had Strats and Teles. I had my own sound. And they say that Rickenbackers can only do "clean jangle"! BTW, I'm talking 6-strings here.

PS: The trick to getting optimal tone with Rickenbackers is to roll down the tone knob some. Their P/Us and guitars tend to be trebly. YMMV. I do love Rickenbackers, though.
