Do you think this is true? PRS McCarty pickups come to mind. I don't really like them at low volumes but when the tubes get cookin they sound awesome!
Another good example is every pickup in every guitar ever made.
The C5 is a prime example.

Through a cranked Marshall or Fender the C5 is cool. Played at more modest and less overdriven volumes it lacks balls and midrange, IMO. Perfect example. Lew
+1 on the C5. I just had that revelation at my last gig.
It's not a bedroom pickup at all. The flat/scooped mids really give some clarity to a midrangey blaring marshall-type amp at gig volume.
