Somebody tell me about Cornfords

The impression I get about these amps is that they're well-made, toneful equipment, but other than that I know nothing of them.

It seems like they're mostly played by metal guys but I wouldn't want to pigeon-hole them in that way without hearing them.

Anybody play Cornford and want to chime in?

Re: Somebody tell me about Cornfords

i've only played thru a Cornford once... it was one of their large metal sounding stacks.... but they make other models too.... i did see Roger Waters band using them and they were playing Floyd music with them...

Re: Somebody tell me about Cornfords

I had the pleasure of playing through a RK100 (Ritchie Kotzens sig amp) and it sounded killer, actually it reminded me alot of a Soldano SLO with a slightly smoother tone and more low end. I can't say much about their reliability over time but it looked like a Tank, the transformers in it were the biggest I've ever seen in an amp.

Hey, I play thro' both an MK50 and a Hellcat. The Mk50 is a 50 watt (very VERY loud 50 watts)using 6L6's, and the Hellcat is 35 (loud) watts using EL84's. I play in a classic rock band and the heaviest we get is Armed and Ready, Crazy Train and Enter Sandman.

Both amps are great for what we do... but apart from the output being the obvious difference, the MK50 is a raw sound... very toneful... imagine a the best Marshall you've heard but with a twist. Personally I love this amp, it really is a big fat sound but it cuts thro' the mix easily. I use this amp through an old Orange 4 x 12 with greenbacks... it's a really nice big raunchy yet warm sound. This amp has no reverb, but once you play through it you may agree with most that it doesn't need it as it seems to have it's own ambience anyway.

The Hellcat.. it's like an AC30 on steroids! Great great sound.. vintage channel that's goes from nice clean to crunchy 70's rock, modern channel that just rips it up. I've heard it said that this amp can do metal... I woulod disaggree with this 'coz there just isn't enough bottom end, but that said it's a really sweet, warm and smooth sound... maybe too nice for a player like me who's NOT so technically gifted. Search YOUTUBE for Guthrie Govan to find out what this amp can do. It has quite a good reverb too if that's your thing. I use this amp through a Cornford 4 x 12 with V30's... and it's Smoooooooth!

Both amps have exceptional build quality, attention to detail is superb. I have called Cornford a few times and I have always been treated repectfully.. however technical or non technical my question. With both amps what you get is a simple layout that is just great pure valve tone, they have made me play better.. 'coz although the gain can be high, I've never heard such clarity and note defininition from the built in drive from any other amp... it NEVER gets muddy. The only downside for me to start with was that if you play sloppy you just can't hide it!!

I can't recommend these amps enough... the ONLY amps I would consider trying now is a Bognor (GearJonsers fault!!) or a Splawn. I'll probably never change now though... with these two I can get all the sounds I will ever want or need.

Re: Somebody tell me about Cornfords

Thanks guys! I was curious.

It's looking like I'll have to wait a bit longer to get that Uberschall to pair with my Splawn Pro Mod and I'm just sort of investigating other options.

Re: Somebody tell me about Cornfords

I'd never heard of them until the Cream reunion shows- they built Clapton some clones of his favorite tweed Twin.

One of RW's guitarists plays on all Richie Kotzen gear : the MIJ Telecaster and the signature amp... he sounds better then Kotzen actually.

Thought that was Cornell that built the tweed clones for EC? Could be wrong.

My old guitar teacher had a Harlequin and it was 6watts of pure sweet smooth tone. I will have one one day!

For non metal cornford sounds go to www.cornfordamps.com and have a trawl through the sounds section. Make sure you listen to Eric Roche - Porquipine its the last one on the list.

Re: Somebody tell me about Cornfords

First I wanna say this: this place reads my mind, literally. Yesterday I wanted to start a thread like these because I was checking the Cornford site and clips but then just got lazy. Anyways I was surprised that I was not impressed by the clips of MK50, I really liked Harlequin but then found out its a practise amp .... just another proof of Glen Tipton on recording with a small amp.

really... i was wondering what type of teles those were.... i figured the sunburst one was an American Deluxe, and the green one looked like some sort of custom.... he had a massive pedalboard.... so did Snowy White

I forget that guys name...... he writes lessons for a UK Guitar Mag

His pedal board is shown on his website... He had the green one in the concert I've been to - and I thought it looked pretty close to the Richie Kotzen sig. found out it is... :cool2:

I would love to get my hands on a RK guitar... of course the railed Dimarzio pickup would fly out of the guitar very fast for a vintage tele pickup... :approve:

cool..... i bet under the volume and gain the only way to keep the noise under some sort of controll for the Waters gigs was to use a Railed humbucker in the tele...

from where i was sitting looking thru my field glasses it looked like there was a second pedalboard with him... that photo of the board looks small compaired to what i saw in Toronto last month... maybe it was a 2nd board for back up.... or maybe i was dreaming....

Dreaming in a Pink Floyd concert? no way... :smokin:

He uses the stock pickups RK uses.
