sonic maximizer

I just put down 200 bucks for a sonic maximizer(with damage coverage or something). I put it in my effects loop and i cant tell if it was worth the money. It makes my cleans sound excellent but takes away from the tube warmth. It makes my distortion sound good but it sounded good already so I dont know if it was really worth it. It seems to cut mids and add bass and highs. Where else should i put it to get better use?

Re: sonic maximizer

You should put it back in the box and return it. Those things make a great amp sound dry and sterile.

Re: sonic maximizer

You might get more out of a 31 band graphic EQ. In the FX loop, set it almost completely flat, but boost whichever frequencies you want to hear more of.

It's funny that guitarists don't usually use EQ's in their FX loop, but you can really beef up the tone with one.

Re: sonic maximizer

i think that if i had a tru rack it would make sense. Like an external preamp->sonic maximizer-> power amp. but in an fx loops it seems kinda lame. I really makes a great difference in my home recording though becuase i run my guitar into a digital recorder(for the amp modeler) then into a quadraverb then the sonic maximizer. this is where it shines. it even sounds good when im using distortion pedals but with amp distortion it sounds too modern. Ugh i hate money :(
