Hi im looking into purchasing a dell notebook but i hear around here the talk is you cant use a normal soundcard for recording purposes. well i just got off the phone with dell and they only offer on-board sound on all their laptops and external soundcard would not be possible. so im kind of stuck here. is this true a normal soundcard would be useless for recording purposes. anyone know about these USB Mixers or SoundCards? i never heard of a USB connection that bypasses the soundcard? can anyone tell me more about them?

mic > mixer/preamp >computer

Re: sound cards?

If your soundcard uses ASIO drivers it should work ok, but it more than likely won't. M-Audio makes some USB interfaces that would probably work great for your application, check Musician's Friend etc.

Re: sound cards?

thats exactly what im looking for but dang thats expensive. this stuff really adds up. wonder if it works with cubase or cakewalk?

Re: sound cards?

1 more question will this act as a pre-amp, i was considering buying a preamp/mixer but since i only have 1 mic'ed guitar i guess i dont need a mixer then

Re: sound cards?

I don't think it will act as a preamp, I didn't get that impression from the feature list anyways.
