Sovtek MiG-60

The Golden Boy

Fleecy Sweaterologist
I managed to pick up a fill in gig with a cover band, so I've been spending a fair amount of time down in the basement learning songs. Yeah, I'm supposed to be playing bass, but I enjoy playing guitar as well. I did a little re-arranging in the basement and "stumbled" on this old Sovtek head that belongs to Wifey. She never plays it, and I played it when she first got it last year or the year before. But I decided to fire that sucker up and see what it could do.

This is a nice sounding head. It needs a bit of cleaning up, but I really dig this thing through my 2x12. My 2x12 is not the best sounding cab to my ears. With the master on 3 or so, and the preamp somewhere around 3:00 this amp has a whole lot of Malcom Youg tone going on. If you turn up the preamp higher it dissolves into a trebly, fizzy mess- but before that point, it's a great "clean" and dynamically responsive overdrive.

It used to be when I saw people playing these amps, my first thought was "that dude can't afford a Marshall." Now I understand there's something else going on there. No, it doesn't sound like my Marshall, but it's a "Marshall inspired" sound that's quite good in it's own right.

Re: Sovtek MiG-60

They really are great sounding amps! It's too bad they came out the same time as the Rectumfriers. At the time, no one appreciated Marshalls, every one was too busy spending $ on Mesa's to notice!!!!

Re: Sovtek MiG-60

Sovtek's are excellent amps. I'd happily buy another one if the price was right. I had a Mig 50 and gave it to my nephew along with a tubeworks 2x12 so he could have a quality amp to play with. He's now doing what he's always wanted to do and with good tone.
