Sozo Cap Users?

So do these babies get smoother with age after they're broken in? I don't hear any fizz or harsh grainey crap riding over my notes and I can only hope that the caps will be even better later...

These caps are very cool....It's almost as if the whole amp breathes better with the Sozo caps....The whole amp is pretty different though now on hindsight, but in a great way....Alot easier to tweak now for sure! Alot of work, but it was all well worth it.

Yeah, hold your nose closed and try and blow out of it. That clogged up feeling in your ears is what I'd describe the Sozo's sound like a bit when you first put them in. They still sound much better than Mallories, but there's a lack of clarity. After about 20 hours (after about a week in my case) you notice that the amp sounds a lot clearer. Then one day (presumably after 100 hours...?) you fire up your amp and realise that it sounds super clear and the caps are fully burned in!

That's what my experience of Sozos for the first time was like. I replaced the only Mallory 150 I had in my amp last night, it was a .022uF signal cap for the switchable extra gain stage I added. It sounds a bit muddy now as I've only played with the mod engaged for about 5 minutes, but it should sound much better once the cap is burned in.

Re: Sozo Cap Users?

They will open up, I don't know about the 100 hr thing but I do hear a shift with them after some good play time. I would not put them in place of any of my amps with Mustards already, they are 'the' voice that soZo is emulating.

I like them---sounded pretty good from the get-go in a Traynor, a few BF and SF Fenders, and some homebrews...they did 'open up' a little over time. For the price, they are a good alternative to more expensive Auricaps, Hovlands, paper in oil, etc.

Thanks for posting all......

Kevlar....I Know...The original mustards were pulled before I got the amp in 99 from Trace.....Maybe Trace ended up with em? LOL.....

Re: Sozo Cap Users?

LOL, I am willing to bet there are many mustards sitting in many a mod shop. Sad stuff, before I started working on my amps I just started taking all my good pre tubes out... Before folks started screamin on the net about this, there were many many perfect working components stolen out of the classics... Don't even get me started about the epoxy covered circuit thing!!!!! The 80s and 90s were extremely cruel to vintage amps. Hell even Fuchs likes dismantling Traynors, I am sure they have stacks and stacks of mustards.... Throw em on the fire to keep the shop warm, they do....lol

O.K. THAT'S IT! I just ordered some Sozo's for the home brew!! I thought it would be silly to replace brand new caps? But here I go.:smack:

Re: Sozo Cap Users?

For me the jury is still out. I built my first two Edanas with Mallory 150's. I love those caps. Upon special request, I built the third one with Sozo's. Not really that much more expensive than the M150's. All three amps sounded killer. Granted I didn't have the last one long enough to "break it in", but I didn't have the first two that long either.

I'd imagine M150's probably need a bit of break-in time as well. I dont' think that bit of marketing is restricted to Sozo. I do find that they delivery rather quickly.

I can get a break if I buy in bulk, but I'm not going to order the huge amounts they want.

Time will tell. Mojo is also offering their own version of mustard caps now. I might have to give them a try as well. (probably the same manufacturer as the Sozo!)

Scott....In all fairness,I've used the M150s for several years and I've always liked them...I just needed to try the Sozo caps to see if they are any better? Too early to tell though....
